August 2, 1936 - November 29, 2021
Alvaro Casas of San Antonio, TX passed away on Monday, November 29, 2021, in Linwood, NJ at the age of 85. A veteran who served in the United States Naval Reserves, Alvaro was deployed to Vietnam as a Navy Corpsman with the Lone Star Battalion, RNMCB-22 Seabees. He also had a 40-year career working for the United States Postal Service. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, son, brother and husband, marrying his high school sweetheart, Lydia, on July 22, 1956 in McAllen, TX. The couple immediately moved to San Antonio, TX where he dedicated his life working to support his family, ever committed to helping his children realize their dreams and ambitions. He worked overtime to send each child to college and when his beautiful daughter Ilene was born, he brought her home when at the time it was unthinkable to home-raise a child with Down syndrome. Because of their decision, actions, and advocacy, the couple was among the first to promote the acceptance of people born with Down syndrome. A brilliant mind and natural problem solver, there was nothing he could not fix or build with his skillful hands and engineering intellect. A man of quiet demeanor, he taught all his children and grandchildren the true reward of hard work and grit, to never give up and always reach for the highest goals. He dearly missed his beloved wife, Lydia, after her unexpended passing in January 2014. Now, they are together again and with our Lord. Thank you, Deddy/Grampy...you will always be our hero. We will always love you, think of you, and miss your silly jokes. He leaves a legacy of honor and integrity to his daughters, Iris C. Heidorn (Doug), Irene C. Tomecek (Terrill), Ida C. Lucchesi (Arnold) and Ilene Casas; sons, Alvaro Casas Jr. (Hilda), Eduardo Casas (Michael) and Roberto Casas; sister, Delia Galvan; and grandchildren, Araceli Casas, Micaela Thomas (Patrick), Kimberly Weinheimer (Nich), Deanna Heidorn, Jeanene Martin (Zachary), Joelene Tomecek, Japheth Tomecek, Ellie Lucchesi and Anden Lucchesi; and great grandchildren, Henry, Aiden, Adley, Benjamin and Owen. Services will be held in San Antonio, TX. Visitation will begin on Thursday, December 16, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 6:30 PM at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 17, 2021 at 8:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1819 Nevada St., San Antonio, TX. The family will receive guests at 7:30 AM. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 9:30 AM with full military honors.
