Greta Maria Bragd
October 9, 1951 - March 24, 2022
Greta Maria Cagle was born on October 9th, 1951 in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the youngest of two children born to Harold Cagle and Gertha Hudson Cagle. Greta did not attend a public school for her early education but entered into an accelerated program that had been recommended by an official at the school where she was to attend. This was unusual for the time, and many were opposed to the idea because of her race. But Greta was brilliant, and she shined in all her studies, silencing the negative voices! She graduated from University and became a nurse and phlebotomist. Greta was married to Charles “Chuck” Leonard Bragd on April 20th,1991, and was married to him until his death on March 6, 2016. Chuck was the love of her life and with her nursing skills, she fought the medical powers that be to bring him home and care for him herself until he passed. Greta and “Chuck” had a cat named Sasha that was a precious part of their family. Greta attended Community Bible Church Northwest. She was an active member of the church and would often sign for the congregation during worship and sometimes for services. She welcomed each person she met, with a warm smile and hug and would often meet up with friends after church for food and fellowship. Greta was a member of several small groups and led a small craft group at her home through the church. Greta was known for her big heart and kind soul. She was a loyal and caring friend. Greta accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and loved him with her whole heart. She was unashamed to speak the truth of the Lord to others and was proud to be a child of God. She loved listening to worship music, singing and worshiping the Lord in church. She loved to embroider scripture verses on various things and give them out to others. That was just one way that Greta liked to spread the Word. Greta also had a profound love for the deaf community and enjoyed communicating through sign language. Through her love of sign language, she was able to witness to many people. Greta was an extremely talented seamstress and made her own wedding dress for her wedding to Chuck. She was a creative designer of custom quilts, painted beautiful paintings, and was an excellent cook. Her passion was making things and sharing them with others: from clothes, quilts, bowl cozies, placemats, purses, embroidered pillows and signs, sweaters, sock bunnies and sock snowmen for children, paintings, and banana pudding! This was just one of the ways Greta would show her love to people. Greta could never be put in a box. She loved challenging herself and learning new things. For the last couple years, she has been learning to speak, read and write Spanish. Every week she had a Spanish lesson with Matthew Van Ryn. Every day possible she would spend an hour or more on Duo practicing and learning her Spanish. She made an entire lamp out of popsicle sticks! Greta could do anything she set her mind to. She loved to share and teach her talents to others. As a teacher she was patient and encouraging. Greta is survived by her nephew, Marc Alexander; niece, Nicole Marshall and nephew, Michael Marshall of Boston, MA ;. And various other nieces and nephews; Aunt Marjorie Johnson; cousins, Arlene Fisher; Gwendilyn Ann Kelly also of Boston, MA.and her ‘adopted’ niece Carmilyn and her husband, Matthew Van Ryn; and her very special longtime friend and “sister from another mother” Antoinette Brady. Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M. followed by the Service at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North,3 401 Cherry Ridge Drive. Interment will be at a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road.
