After graduating from Somerset High School in 1976, he obtained a degree in education in 1994 from the University of Texas at San Antonio. After graduation, he worked in education for over 19 years in the San Antonio Independent School District. He started out as instructional assistant at Tafolla Middle school for three years and later transitioned to teaching high school.
