Joe E. Newman November 14, 1934 – December 31, 2021 - 87 years old The family of Joe Newman (Popo) is sad to announce his eternal rest with our Lord. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His beloved wife, Emily Newman, died earlier this year on March 8, 2021. His daughter, Jeanne Newman also preceded him in death along with many other family and friends. Joe is survived by his daughters, Sharon N. Garibaldi (spouse, Tony) and Patricia J. MacCall (spouse Finn); 7 grandchildren - Nicole White, Stephanie Rooks, Jessica Crabbe, Joe MacCall, Brian Garibaldi, Kimberly MacCall and Ruby MacCall; and 7 great-grandchildren - Isabella Rooks, Kylie White, Peyton White, Aubrey Rooks, Sophia Rooks, Jameson MacCall and Camden Crabbe. Joe loved his family very much and enjoyed a wonderful Christmas celebrating with many of them. Especially his great-granddaughters who made him smile and laugh hysterically. Joe was a devoted Catholic. He went to St. Leo’s school as a child and learned so much from Father MacManus. He then went to Central Catholic High School and St. Mary’s University where he received a Master’s in Business Administration and Finance. He had an incredible employment history where he worked for City Public Service for 29 years retiring as an upper-level Executive. He also worked for Santa Rosa Health System and was a Budget Officer for Alamo Community College District. Joe had many friends where he lived that will miss him greatly. He enjoyed playing Bingo there and having happy hours. He was a friendly man who acknowledged everyone he saw with “hello my friend” or “hello darling”. He was a compassionate, understanding, generous Christian soul. He was fond of music and loved watching The Voice. He had wonderful nurses he cared about as if they were family. And he also enjoyed a very long friendship with Howard Freeman. Joe was very athletic. He lettered 4 years in football and track for Central Catholic High School. He was also a champion bowler and a Golden Gloves boxer. He loved watching the Dallas Cowboys but his favorite was Tom Brady. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78230.
