July 21, 1933 - May 26, 2022
Jose Carlos Vasquez, 88, passed away peacefully the morning of May 26, 2022, surrounded by his family. Carlos was born in 1933 in San Antonio, Texas to David and Elvira Vasquez. He was a 1951 graduate of Sidney Lanier High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps later that year. Serving as a Sergeant on the front lines during the Korean War, Carlos was awarded numerous medals including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, The National Defense Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. After the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Soto in 1954. They were married for 61 years until Gloria’s passing in 2015. Together, they raised 6 children and were devoted parents, grandparents and great-grandparents since 1956. A career civil servant, Carlos worked for the US Postal Service, retiring as a Regional Supervisor in 1992. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, cheering for the San Antonio Spurs, and regular evenings of Texas Hold’em with friends and family. Always the voracious reader, Carlos’ knowledge on the Civil War, WWII, and the Korean War was second to none. A loyal friend to the end, he regularly kept in touch with friends old and new, and was quick to help in any way he could for those in need. Survivors include his sister Rose De la Pena, children Lucille Kee (Paul), David Vasquez (Isabel), Laura Vasquez Farias (Guillermo), Steve Vasquez (Jennifer), Thomas Vasquez (Lisa) and Mark Vasquez, along with 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren
