Ernest Campos, “Ernie” to those closest to him, entered his eternal rest surrounded by the love of his family on August 23, 2022, at the age of 68 in San Antonio. He is preceded in death by his parents, Grace and Diego Campos; sister-in-law Betty Campos; and several aunts, uncles and cousins with whom he shared a special bond. He is survived by his wife Rita H. Campos; son, Shawn P. Campos; daughter, Gabrielle R. Campos; brothers, Richard and Edward “Eddie” Campos; sister, Susan Contreras; son-in-law, Dreyton J. Oliva; and mother-in-law, Mary R. Reta. Ernie was proud to be a part of the Jefferson High School Family and enjoyed playing basketball at the Woodlawn Lake gym. He met his loving wife of 36 years, while enjoying one of their favorite past times, bowling and cruising around in his Bronco. They welcomed into this world their 2 children to whom he devoted his life. They will always remember him in his work shirt, jeans, boots, and cap. Although he was dedicated to mastering his profession, he never missed a practice, game, school play, dance, or any other event his children were involved in. Ernie was a master of his craft, not only building a foundation of love and support for his family but also building their family home with his own hands. Ernie worked for Metropolitan Contracting Co. for 31 years where he won several awards for his outstanding work in executing multi-million dollar projects. He was an avid classic rock fan often enjoying a cold one on his deck with his wife, children, family, and friends. An avid sports fan, Ernie loved the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys; never missing an opportunity to BBQ and enjoy a game. He loved having his cousins, nieces and nephews, in-laws, extended family, and friends around him. He was proud that the house he built was the hub for all celebrations, especially Christmas! Ernie’s silent strength helped him WIN his 6-year battle with stage 4 cancer. He never let his illness or treatment bring him down, fighting until the end. Ernie spent his last years on earth traveling more than he ever had before; he saw his son get married and graduate college, and his daughter engaged. He lived life to the fullest with his wife, children, family, and friends; some of who never knew he was sick. Ernie’s infectious smile and wit will remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, compassion, support, and strength. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 11, 2022, starting at 11:00 A.M. with Celebration of Life starting at 1:00 P.M. Mission Funeral Chapel South. Services will conclude at the funeral home.
