Tributes

Lieutenant Mario Antonio Hernandez, retired Bexar County Sheriff, born September 8, 1938 in Saltillo, Mexico went to be with the Lord on April 11, 2015. Mario graduated from Edison High School in 1959 where he met several life- long friends, particularly Pete Dominguez. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force. During his time in the Reserves, he began working at the Bexar County Sheriff's department. After his retirement from the Sheriff's Department, he worked security for Cornerstone Church and Cornerstone Christian Schools. His career in law enforcement spanned over 31 years. Though he was proud of his career in law enforcement, his greatest joy came in being a grandfather and treating his granddaughter Charli Grace, to breakfast consisting of anything chocolate. Charli was the light of his life and he was her "Abuelito". He is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel Hernandez and Genoveva Leal Hernandez, his Granny Concepcion Garay Leal, aunt Connie Mendoza, his Uncle Pedro Leal and Aunt Fiela Leal. He is survived by his dedicated wife of 35 years, Betty Zambrano Hernandez; his children Aida Hernandez fiancé, David Perez, Amanda Hernandez Nicholas, Melissa Galvan and Jesse Hernandez; and granddaughters, Charli Grace and Chandler Grey; and his only brother, Sergio M. Hernandez and wife Gloria, their daughters Maricela Gray Scott, Evan, and Elise, Mara Kellner Scott, Aidan and Gavin and son Marco Hernandez Jeremy and Christopher. He has many cousins from San Antonio, Colorado and Mexico. Special thanks to Dr. Robert Schnitzler and his caring staff, especially Vicky and Maria for the care and loved they showed. Special thanks to Dr. Nora Walker for her care and support. Special thanks to Dr. Allen Garcia and Maria and Irma for putting up with Mario and always making him feel special. A special thanks to Dr. Ronald Dranger, Gail and Monica T. for their care and concern. Visitation will be at Cornerstone Church on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm in the Vada Hagee Chapel. Funeral services will be at Cornerstone Church on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 from 10:00 – 11:00 am with a procession to Mission Burial Park North.
