Audry William Austin passed away peacefully in his sleep Monday, October 18, 2004 at his home in San Antonio. Born June 19, 1918 in Wichita Falls, TX, he worked as a construction superintendent on many public infrastructure projects throughout South Texas in his 37 year career. AW as he was known to family and friends was a member of the Elks, and the Star Light, Star Dusters, Jolly Dollar, and Candle Light Dance Clubs. He and his wife of 62 years Isabel loved to trip the light fantastic with their many good friends on a weekly basis. AW served his country in WWII as a deployed military policeman. Upon discharge he returned to his beloved Texas, settling in San Antonio in 1946. To his family and friends he was a proud, hard-working loving man of few words, whose life defined the phrase salt-of-the-earth American. He loved his small farm in Lytle, spending hours in his retirement just shootin the breeze about crops, cows, and the price per barrel of Texas sweet with the locals. Above all, he loved his family, especially his great-grandchildren Samantha, Zachary, Maty, Taylor, and Jack. He spent many loving times with them and no matter his physical condition his face would light up with joy whenever they were near. They will miss him terribly, as will his loving wife Isabel, daughter Sandra, Son-In-Law John Fedor; grandchildren Leslie, John and Jason, their spouses, and his sister Willa Bell and husband Wayne. He is preceded in death by his parents Obus and Lula Austin. Mr. Austin was afflicted with Amyotrophic Lateral Scherosis ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease. The family wishes to thank the V.A. Hospital, the ALS Association, the Reeves Rehab Center, and Christus Santa Rosa Hospice for the loving care they provided during his illness. In-lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to the ALS Association-South Texas, In memory of A.W. Austin, 6800 Park Ten Boulevard Suite 220N San Antonio, Texas 78213. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday~October 22, 2004 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North with a visitation 1 hour prior to the service. A private inurnment will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
