Alejandro D. Ortega April 8, 1943 – July 29, 2023 Alejandro Del Toro Ortega, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully on July 29, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas with his children and grandchildren by his side, holding his hands in prayer. Alejandro was born on April 8,1943 in La Pryor, TX to the late Leandro E. Ortega and Emiteria Del Toro Ortega. He married his one true love, Rosa Lee, on July 6, 1963, in Floresville, TX. The two were inseparable and they created countless unforgettable memories as they moved through life, including times at their favorite restaurants, enjoying live music shows, Fiesta events, and numerous family occasions and friend gatherings. They went on to raise three daughters; Donna, Vivian, and Jennifer. As the 2nd oldest out of nine siblings, family was very important to him. His greatest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren. Spending time with family and friends, just laughing and being together brought him immense happiness. Alejandro, “Chey” ”Alex” “Mr. O” “Pops” or “Popo” led a full life filled with adventure and early explorations that all started on the rancho. He ran wild and free in his early days, yet dedicated and strong-willed while finding his way in this world. From laying terrazzo in various parts of Texas with the Venice Art Company, to giving his best “cowboy” by lending his hand on the Segura’s ranch off Moursund Rd, or working and painting at a car body shop he ran with one his best pals; Alejandro knew the value of hard-work, very quickly prioritizing the needs of his family over his own. In 1966, he began working as a Laborer in the Power Department at City Public Service, holding various positions such as Utility Worker, Crewman, Carpenter Painter, and Apprentice Painter, eventually working his way up to Foreman, Paint Department in 1995 while simultaneously earning his GED from Harlandale ISD. He gave 35 years of service to City Public Service, retiring in 2001 to enjoy the simple things in life. He had many hobbies and a wide range of unique skills. If he couldn’t fix it, he knew someone who could. He made friends easily and welcomed all. You could find him camping and swimming along the Frio river, hunting or fishing around Somerset, taking road trips east and west of Texas to explore this beautiful country first hand, cheering his beloved Dallas Cowboys, SA Spurs or TX Rangers, firing up the pit in his backyard, or any yard really, and last but certainly not least, he was usually cracking jokes and a cold one while playing his favorite conjunto music. Wherever he was, he was always present, ever patient, a great provider and wise listener. His witty sense of humor shined through, even in challenging times. He had quite a way with words and embodied a “less is more” spirit, often leaving a profound impact after only saying a few sentences. He will be remembered for his brave heart, strong and at times stubborn nature, unique life perspective, funny personality, and most of all for his unwavering love and dedication. Alejandro shared his heart and spirit with family and friends. He truly loved each of them - and if you knew him, then you knew this was true. Alejandro is preceded in death by both his parents, grandson Anthony Joseph Barba, siblings, Jose Luis Ortega, Enrique Ortega, Arturo Ortega, Teresa Ortega Ochoa, Maria Luisa Ortega; sister in law Mary Ortega; brother in laws Guadalupe Ochoa and Roberto Chavez. He will be missed by many including his loving wife of 60 years Rosa Lee Ortega; daughters Donna M. Garcia, Vivian Ortega Barba (Anthony), Jennifer Ortega Baird (Joshua); grandchildren Alexandra Garcia, Jakob E. Garcia, Lyllian R. Garcia, Koryn N. Wilcher, Dominic A. Barba, Theodore V. Baird, and Benjamin Del Toro Baird; siblings Leandro Ortega, Guadalupe “Lupita” Olguin (Delores) and Reynoldo Ortega; sister in laws, Frances Ortega, Carmen Ortega, Diana Ortega.
