Alexander James 'Jim' Jacobs, 72, of San Antonio, joined his Lord and Savior on April 11, 2012, following an impressive and inspiring exhibition of remarkable fearlessness during a five month battle to heal a failing body. He lost that battle with a silent endurance and uncommon courage, surrounded by family and friends as he passed into the arms of Jesus. Jim was born in his childhood home in San Antonio on June 18, 1939, to Alexander Julius Jacobs and Lillian Beatrice Bostic Jacobs. He was a loving, devoted son who joyfully provided for his mother in her later years. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1957, Jim became a U.S. Marine. He honorably served his country, which he so passionately adored, from 1957-1961. In 1963, he began his career with Union Pacific Railroad. He was the picture perfect train engineer with his denim overalls, red T shirt, and blue striped Union Pacific cap. In 2001, he retired after 38 years of faithful service. Jim enjoyed a myriad of hobbies including: photography, hunting, fishing, boating, carpentry, leatherwork, charities, archery, and motorcycles. An avid outdoor adventurer, he was granted many gifts from God to produce beautiful, artistic treasures. Beyond his career, hobbies, and gifts, he found absolute joy, elevated spirit, and true purpose in his beautiful relationships with friends and family. He celebrated life and his heart was full of happiness, even to the end, because of those extraordinary relationships. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Lillian Jacobs; his brother, Jay B. Jacobs; and his sister-in-law, Betty Jacobs. To cherish his memory, carry on his bold spirit, and reflect his confident demeanor, he leaves his nephew, Dr. Jeffery Jacobs and wife Jamie; his niece, Dr. Joni Jacobs; his great nephew, Zachary Childers; two great nieces, Meagan and Blaire Jacobs; brother-in-law, Tommy Lauderdale and wife Cathy; step-nephew, Tommy Lauderdale III and wife Karen; step-niece, Jan Lauderdale Lares and husband Rene; step-nephew, Danny Lauderdale and wife Beverly; step-nephew, Doyle Lauderdale and wife Bonnie, and all of their beautiful children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mission Park South at 1700 Southeast Military Dr. The service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, April 26, 2012, at the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to The Alzheimer's Association in memory of Jim. Although he did not suffer from this disease, other family members have, and this charity was particularly important to him.
