Alice Marie Whalan Kalka was born on October 28, 1928 in Gonzales, Texas on the Whalan farm. She graduated from Gonzales High School in May of 1946. She went on to marry Charles (Charlie) Kalka of Bandera, TX in 1949. They had 61 wonderful years together and had four wonderful children Charles Jr (Dorothy) Kalka, Linda (Charlie) Daggett, Patricia (Jack) Ballard and William Kalka. They shared 10 grandchildren Anthony (Jackie) Daggett, Stephanie Kalka, Stacy (Norm) Pattenaude, Lisa (Brad) Pfeil, Sarah (Chris) Haley, Steven (Stephanie) Daggett, Dana Ballard, Kristen (Richard) Virosteck, Keith (Sarah) Daggett, and Jacob Ballard. They also shared 15 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. Alice Marie was an adventurous and outgoing young lady who participated in several school activities including cheer/dance. She continued along this line modelling for several western wear clothing lines when one took her to Bandera, Texas where she met her future husband, Charlie. After marrying in Gonzales, TX the lovebirds moved to Bandera, Texas. In 1950 they became the proud parents of Charles Jr. During this joyous time Alice stayed at home to be a stay-at-home mom, then following Linda, Patricia, and William she started substitute teaching while the kids were in school. Alice subbed at St. Benedicts Church for about 15 years during this time and then got asked to join the St. Benedict's Church Council. Following her children graduating from Sam Houston High School Alice became a part of the women in election group in her area. She went on to become a Bexar County Election Judge from 1997-2005. Upon retiring from this post, she supported the San Antonio Fire & Police Pensioner’s Association, where she volunteered time in a few capacities including roll book. She is an active member in good standings to this day. She is an active member at St. Jerome’ Catholic Church where she volunteered and donated food, time and help. True to her southern and country upbringing she also volunteered and became a Life Member of the San Antonio Livestock Show supporting the youth in a few capacities. Later in Alice and Charlie’s life they enjoyed visiting their kids and grandkids, watching sporting events for the numerous grandkids and great grandkids, and hosting seasonal gatherings. She enjoyed watching her cows and turkeys at the farm when she could or looking at pictures if she could not. Alice is preceded in death by her husband Charlie Kalka, sons Charles Jr and William Kalka, granddaughter Stephanie Kalka and brother Louis Whalan. Alice has many family, friends and “family” that she loved dearly and kept up with through the years. Going to play Bingo, family reunions, church gatherings and enjoying life was the highlight for her. She will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice.
