Alonzo Perry Jr. was born on July 12, 1950, In Detroit, Michigan. He was the third of five children born to the late Alonzo Perry Sr. and Ora T Perry. Being the first boy, he was affectionately called “Man”, usually pronounced “Maine”. He embraced the grace of Christ during his early years at Williams Chapel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Alonzo’s spirituality was exemplified in his relationships, his actions, and deeds. Throughout his vibrant life, Alonzo displayed a passion for sports, particularly excelling in basketball, football, track, and baseball during his time at Kettering High School. His dedication led him to earn an athletic scholarship to Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge. Beyond sports, Alonzo relished friendly card games and cherished the camaraderie of his friends and loved ones. When Alonzo joined the Army he continued to play basketball for his company. While in the military he met and married the love of his life, Lee Alma Phillips, an Army Nurse in 1974. The couple was later blessed with their delightful son, Preston. Together the family continued their dedicated military service with moves to Georgia, Kentucky, and a tour of duty in Germany and finally San Antonio Texas. SGT Alonzo Perry Jr and his family were very proud of the many contributions and sacrifices they made for our country. After completing his Military career, Alonzo received his Air Conditioning and Refrigeration license. He utilized his skills to benefit those around him. Alonzo also proudly worked for his son’s landscaping business. Alonzo and Preston partnered in doing small house repairs. He actively mentored his nephews and was elated with his grandchildren, who adored their “Popa”. He found much joy in following and assisting his grandchildren with their schooling, sports, finances and in making good life decisions. After his retirement, Alonzo pursued many of his hobbies; including range shooting, smoking meats (especially turkeys), caring for his dogs and cats, visiting family and friends, and staying in touch (in person and by phone) with everyone he knew, especially the Elderly. Together, Alonzo and his wife, Lee established and operated Isaiah’s House, an assisted living home for the greater San Antonio area, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many. Known for his unwavering dedication to family, Alonzo always kept his siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins close, sharing countless captivating tales of his life adventures and family milestones. His guidance and wisdom were a source of inspiration for all those around him. On October 12, 2023 Alonzo Perry Jr. made his transition to his heavenly home where he is rejoicing with the Lord; his parents; his sister Joyce (Perry) Fulton; his sister-in-law, Orlinda (Phillips) Taylor, and other relatives and friends. Alonzo leaves a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to those dear to his heart. His memory will forever be cherished by his devoted wife of 49 years, Lee Alma Perry; a faithful son Preston Izaak Perry; two precious grandchildren, Jasmyne Perry and Stefan Perry; three bonus sons/nephews, Adolph Phillips, DeAngelo Phillips, and Ric Sean Hill. As well as one sister Doris Perry of Detroit, MI; two brothers, LaVal Perry (Patricia Lucas), of Detroit, MI, and Darrell Perry (Malinda), of Houston, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
