Tributes

It cannot be said that she has gone to God, because she believed that God was always with her, and she was always with Him. A believer in the power of prayer to change the world, she prayed for those she loved as well as for strangers, notably wounded warriors. She had a special devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and her daily prayers included at least one Rosary, and often more than one. She dearly loved her children and their children and their children, and she raised them to respect both the laws of God and man. She had a passion for music, dance and smiling. She could make anyone smile, and loved to make grand entrances wherever she went. Divorced in 1970, she continued to work outside the home to support her family. To enhance her earning capability, she attended the Durham School of Business to learn to type and other front office skills, and she excelled in all aspects of this new undertaking. That effort rekindled her desire for a higher education and she took college and university courses well into her sixties. She valued knowledge and learning for the pure joy of how it enriched her life, and she shared what she learned with those around her and as she volunteered to prepare people endeavoring to earn their G.E.Ds. It was her thirst for knowledge that led her to read books and newspapers incessantly, and to solve crossword puzzles, usually in ink, with a great deal of confidence and on a daily basis. It kept her mind sharp, and even at 90 years old she was extremely articulate and intelligent and well-versed in current events. She loved life and seemed to be able to defy medicine, as she recovered from the brink time after time, even when doctors and nurses had given up on her. She came into this world on December 3rd, 1924, in Indiana Harbor, IN, and was the first of five children born to Manuel Gomez and Maria del Carmen Valdez. The family settled in San Antonio when she was twelve. She would later marry Joe Romero Marinez on October 19, 1945, and bear nine children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Anacleto and Manuel; her sister, Alicia; sons, Fidel Gilberto, John Gerald, and our angel James Arthur; and grandsons Shane and Miguel. She is survived by her brother, Fidel Gilberto; sisters, Margarita Raymond, Amelia Armando, Juanita, Marta, Maria, Ino Tomas and Patricia Luis; children, Joe Ginny, Gloria Rudy, Robert, Christine Larry, Michael, and David Betty; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous close cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.
