Bertha May Meier passed into eternal rest Friday June 12th, 2015. She was born to Fred and May Smith on April 5, 1927 in Jackson County, Kansas. After her mother married Thomas Keefer, she and her brother Ronald gained a stepfather, sister and brother, Donna & Robert. Upon completion of High School normal training, Bertha began her career as a one-room school teacher at Bittersweet School. After courting and corresponding during the war Bertha married Virgil Michael Meier on October 16, 1947. "Sweetest Day of the Year" according to Bertha and substantiated by Hallmark at the time. Bertha was predeceased by Virgil, her loving husband of 58 years, her daughter, Anita Jane and her parents, stepfather, stepbrother and stepsister. Bertha is survived by her brother, Ronald, and her four remaining children; Judith Paul Stuart, Dennis Penny Meier, Steven Rose Meier and David, Teresa Meier along with 12 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly, seldom missing an opportunity to spend time with them. She always had a warm place in her heart for little ones. After moving to San Antonio in 1958, she acquired her Kindergarten teaching certificate and took up her love of teaching young minds at Discovery School. As with most teachers, she spent countless hours focused on finding ways and 'things' to bring to her classroom. Many still alive. Most memorable was a small non-poisonous snake she found while rummaging through the pasture for collage materials. She included Virgil and his beekeeping often. Her heart and mind were constantly focused on bringing and being the best for her students. As her own children grew and left the 'nest', she and Virgil took up square dancing. Their love of square and round dancing led them to many memorable friends and events across the country. They served ably as club founder and president of the Cut-Ups and members and officers of Camping Squares, utilizing their motor home and later, fifth wheel. They held many board positions including President of the Alamo Area Square and Round Dance Assn. taking the message of fun and fellowship to square dancers across Texas and the USA. With Virgil as pilot and Bertha as copilot and journal keeper, they spent much time Rving. Particularly enjoying meeting with family "snowbirds" in valley towns of McAllen, Pharr and Mission. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
