Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. (Proverbs 31: 28-31) Betty Sue Sturrock, age 90, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2020, in Boerne, TX, surrounded by her loving family. She lived a fruitful life, born on December 10, 1929, to Oscar and Sammie Warren in San Antonio, TX. Sue remained in Texas, bouncing around the state with her family. She and her parents moved to Floresville and back to San Antonio, and eventually with her two younger brothers, Gene and Bobby, to Fort Worth and back to San Antonio again. She graduated from Jefferson High School and attended Trinity University where she met her husband, Gene Sturrock, in 1948. They married a year later in the same church as her parents, Laurel Heights UMC. It was only fitting that they met on the tennis court because they stayed active throughout their lives, water skiing with their family at Canyon Lake and Inks Lake, joining bowling leagues, country and western dancing as well as square dancing, traveling many places, and walking in their neighborhoods. Together Sue and Gene had six children. Determined to provide her children with a loving home, Sue was a stay-at-home mom who avidly supported their activities. She was always in attendance at or volunteering with baseball, basketball, and football games, track meets, dance recitals, pep squad events, gymnastics, choir concerts, school plays, PTA meetings, Vacation Bible School, and field trips. She even participated in car pools and made an effort to be present at any other events her children were involved in, school or otherwise. Sue was a creative soul, as she loved sewing, quilting, stained glass, macramé, ceramics, cooking, and baking. She was a wonderful seamstress, making most of her daughters’ clothes, prom dresses, costumes, and wedding dresses. Active in a quilting group, she had a lot of her quilts displayed on walls or beds. Her beautiful stained glass pieces also decorated her home. She loved reading, listening to country music (her favorite artist was Eddy Arnold), word puzzles, and Jeopardy, often beating the contestants to answer. She was an active member of Asbury UMC and Trinity UMC for many years and regularly attended Fredericksburg UMC, and it was important to her that her children were raised in the church. When her children were older, Sue worked at the UTHSCSA bookstore as textbook manager for ten years. In 2000, she and Gene moved to Fredericksburg, TX. After Gene passed in 2016, she moved to Boerne, TX to be closer to her children. Above all, she was a devoted, loving, patient, and selfless wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother as well as a friend to many, loved by all. She touched the lives of others in conversation with everyone who was lucky enough to meet her. Serving as a beacon of light, kindness, and patience to her family, friends, and loved ones, Sue always had a smile that brightened the room. Her family cherished the warmth of her cooking and disposition. Her husband, Gene, admired her “amazing” abilities as a wife and mother, in awe of her “continuing love, patience, guidance, and devotion to each of them.” He treasured her “unconditional love” and credited her for having “provided the foundation and stability needed for a lifetime partnership,” which encompassed 66 strong years. Her children describe her as loving, patient, kind, friendly, and generous, setting the model example for being a good mother for them. She was the most generous person many people knew, and may ever know, always willing to lend a helping hand without ever expecting anything in return. She hosted lovely Christmases, never caring about the presents she would receive, only wanting her family to be present together. Hopefully she knew she was always the greatest gift there. She once described her mother as “a sweet, wonderful lady that everyone loved.” Those are the exact words people often use to describe Sue, too. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gene Sturrock, and her brother, Gene Warren. She is survived by her brother, Bobby; six children, Tom Sturrock, Mary Anne Richardson, Carol Chambless, John Sturrock, Janet Sturrock, and Tricia Turner; nine grandchildren, Tara, Tiffany, Matt, Jared, Jacque, Kimberly, Rachael, Emily, and Michael; and ten great grandchildren. She will be missed by all who survive her and welcomed in heaven with open arms by her dear husband, Gene, and all family and friends who have gone before.
