Carlos de la Vega Hernandez (January 18, 1927 – February 28, 2017) Carlos de la Vega Hernandez was surrounded by his family as he went to be with the Lord on February 28, 2017 at the age of 90. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Mary Louise Elizondo Hernandez; daughters Mary Helen Mansbach (Joseph), Lupe Torres (Gil), Sylvia Saucedo (Jose) and Lisa White; sons Carlos, Jr. (Olivia), John Henry, Anthony, Michael (Laura) and Martin Hernandez. Sisters Alice Cantu, Elida Gonzales, and Yolunda Orduna; 21 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Rachel Hernandez , sisters Bertha Rivera, Gloria Trejo, brothers Robert Hernandez, Alfred Hernandez, Arthur Hernandez, and his half sister and brother, Mary Ramirez and Ruben Macias. Carlos de la Vega Hernandez born 18 January 1927 in San Antonio, Texas to Albert and Rachel Hernandez. He was the 5th of 9 children. He grew up in the downtown area. He went to school at the original Burnet Elementary and attended Page Middle. His early life during the depression was difficult but those hardships helped shape this wonderful man. He and his siblings were products of the Depression Era and part of America's greatest generation. He started working during his early teenage years. At age 15, the most beloved woman in his life, his precious mother died. Due to the ever-increasing demand to help provide monetary support, Carlos left school after the eighth grade. Carlos joined the Army at the age of 18 and married Mary Louise Elizondo in 1950. Dad loved being in the Army, he liked the discipline, respect, required of him. They did some traveling, and he was station at Japan, while his loving wife and devoted mom kept the household running here in San Antonio. After serving our country, he retired from the Army after 22 years as a Medic. They lived in the downtown area and settled on Adams Street (which they have lived for 52 years). Dad also worked at the State Hospital and retired after 22 years. Carlos a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa. A great provider, hard worker, and loyal person, he leaves behind a strong legacy of love. To Grace Place (Central location) where Dad enjoyed going and felt very comfortable, his family says thank you for the love, compassion, and patience given to our Dad by the caregivers. Carlos Hernandez was very proud of all his children and greatly appreciated his children for taking care of him and mom. A special thank you to all his children for the sacrifice, and compassion given to Dad. Thank you to his children's families for their understanding. He also had a great appreciation for his neighbors who look out for each other such as the neighborhood families: Garcia, Martinez, Nino, Hodge, Garza, Contreras, Lopez, Bonacini, and the Hoog's. Special thanks to his wife, Mary Louise Elizondo Hernandez for always loving, supporting, taking care of, and praying for him. Thanks to his wife Mary and children for putting their love in action and stepping up so he was able to remain at home. Carlos will be greatly missed (especially that great smile) but never forgotten. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 from 5-9 pm with a 7pm Rosary at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South (1700 SE Military Dr .) Services will continue Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 9am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
