Celebration Of A Lifetime Commitment To Service Christine Ann Nedwed Smits, 71, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2015 in the comfort of her home surrounded by loving family members. Born on June 12, 1944 in Rockville Centre, NY to Alfred and Helen Smits Johnson, Christine attended Wake Forest University and graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. Christine went on to earn her Masters of Arts in Counseling from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX in 1989. On January 14, 1968, Christine married Gary Donald Nedwed in Port Washington, NY, her life partner and soul mate for over 47 years. In 1978, Christine and family moved to San Antonio, TX where she worked in a variety of customer service roles for Delta Airlines, USAA and non-profit Any Baby Can as Director of Family Friends. Christine is survived by her devoted husband, three loving children Leigh Mapes Wes, Larry Nedwed Amy and Laurie Nedwed Terry Peschka and her adoring grandchildren Madison, Catelin, Ryan, Andrew and Kaya who so loved their precious "Marmee/Mimi" up to the moon and beyond infinity. Christine is predeceased by her father, mother and brother, Alfred Smits Jr. Christine's passions in life were her beloved family, experiencing the earth's beauty through world travel to all seven continents and over 50 countries, and graciously serving others. Following a visit to Southeast Asia, Christine sponsored the education of "Boki", an underprivileged child from Thailand. She inspired those around her to live, laugh and love, leaving an indelible impact and legacy of kindness, compassion and generosity. Christine's unique gift was to establish a meaningful connection with the people in her life, placing their needs before hers and always making them feel special. A memorial service to celebrate Christine's life will be held at 1:30pm on Monday, July 6, at Mission Park Funeral Chapel North, 3401 Cherry Ridge Drive in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Christine's honor to ThriveWell Cancer Foundation, www.thrivewell.org, MD Anderson Cancer Center, www.mdanderson.org or Gentiva Hospice.
