Daisy Lee Fontenot Verette, age 93, was born November 2, 1920 in Mamou, Louisiana and passed away peacefully Saturday, October 11, 2014 at her San Antonio home surrounded by the love of her family. She was the daughter of Shewell Joseph and Bergeline Fontenot, adopted and lovingly raised by Retha Lawrence Fontenot and Clifton Lawrence in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph Verette, daughter Shirley Verette, grandson Bobby Verette, son-in-law Joseph D. Shimek and sisters, Reana Frilot, Gladys Fontenot twin and Margorie Lertique. She married Joseph Joe and moved to San Antonio. During Joe's military service they moved to California for a short time and later settled back in San Antonio to raise their family. Faith and Family were the pillars of Daisy's life. She was an active member of St. Benedict Catholic Church for more than five decades and continued her worship with the assistance of Eucharistic ministers who visited her home weekly. She was a woman of prayer. Her rosary and prayers for her family were of great comfort. She was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the lessons she quietly and not so quietly was able to impart upon them. Family events and holidays were her favorite activity followed closely by her love of Cajun music, sewing and quilting. She never missed an opportunity to dance which she did at every family wedding or home doing housework and even attempted in her last days. A skilled story-teller, she delighted in sharing her humor, wit and wisdom. One of her greatest wishes was to stay in her home which she accomplished with the aid and care of her daughter Betty for the past twelve years. The last two years of her life was a slow progression of end-stage Dementia to which she responded with dignity, grace and courage. Daisy is survived by her children, Carol Shimek, Robert Verette Patty, Larry Verette Pat, Melinda Bennett Marvin, Betty McMurray and Sharon McCord; her grandchildren, Laura Mika Ronnie, Glenn Verette, Alan Verette Cara, Brian Shimek Becky, Ronnie Verette Brandy, Paul Bennett Melinda, Marceline Verette, Jason McCord, Robin Castro Jack, Shaun McMurray, Lindsay Fry Chris; and 25 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Anna Stewart, Genevieve Servantes and Tania Holmes for their home-care, compassion and kindness, which Daisy cherished. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 16th at Dellcrest Funeral Home, 2023 S. WW White Road, San Antonio, Texas 78222 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Daisy's life will be held on Friday, October 17th, 1:00 pm at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 4535 Lord Road, San Antonio, Texas 78220. Interment to follow at 2:30 pm , Ft. Sam National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach. Daisy's first language was French, so to her we say Je t'aime We love you, allez, dansons Come on, let's dance.
