Daniel B. Grassel, Sr. Oct. 20, 1919 – June 25, 2011 Daniel B. Grassel, Sr. lifetime resident of San Antonio passed away Saturday June 25, 2011 peacefully at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Dorothy Foster Grassel. His parents Paul & Martha Grassel, 2 brothers & 4 sisters. He is survived by his children - Daniel B Grassel, Jr. & Janice; Maureen Saldivar & Michael; Janice Grassel; Linda Johnson & Bruce. Grandchildren Zachary Franks, Christian Franks, Amy Dayton & Alan; Robin Waters & David; Marcella Garcia; Elle Johnson; Jackson Johnson. Great grandchildren – Adam, Anaya, Audie Dayton & Brooke Waters. After graduating from Brackenridge High School in San Antonio Daniel played amateur & minor league baseball for Veltman Kids, Ploch Oilers and Dan's Café where he hit against some of the greatest – Bob Feller was his most talked about hit. During World War II Daniel joined the Navy becoming an electrician by trade. He was aboard the USS McLanahan and was a part of the invasion of Southern France and Anzio. He worked for City Public Service for 43 years retiring in 1984. A 75 year member of IBEW & Local Union 500. He was also a member of Patterson Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Alzafar Shrine Directors Staff. He attended Oak Hills Presbyterian Church. Most of his neighbors remember him as Dan The Turtle Man. At his prime he had over 7 pet turtles in his back yard. To this day he hears from grown kids on the block who remember Dan The Turtle Man. He had a kind heart and a gentle soul and he loved chocolate pie and cake. The family would like to thank Emeritus Hamilton House Assisted Living, Christus Santa Rosa and Vitas Hospice for making his journey one of dignity. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given to your favorite charity. SERVICES Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 12:00PM at the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Katheryn Barlow-Williams officiating.
