It is with extreme sadness we announce that Derek Michael Winters, born January 27, 1971, in San Antonio, Tx, passed away January 3, 2022, at age 50, with his loved ones by his side. He is survived by his son Brody Winters, brother Jacob Winters, mother Lisa Manning, stepfather Carl Manning, girlfriend Michelle Revis, and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was a bright light in this world to his family and friends and will be deeply missed by many. After graduating from John Marshall High School, Derek went to UTSA where he discovered his passion for music. A skilled guitarist, singer, and entertainer, Derek began his career as a musician. When he performed, Derek was in complete command of the crowd and brought joy to thousands. Derek not only entertained audiences in Texas and around the U.S. for 30 years but also took the time to mentor many up-and-coming musicians, which brought him great joy. The majority of his musical career was spent on stage performing solos on his guitar, but he also sang and played with many San Antonio bands. Derek's innovative spirit was not limited to music. He also found that food was a great way to bring joy to others. Derek's culinary skills began in his home kitchen and expanded to meal prep, small catering events, and innovative twists to create his unique flavor combinations and signature dishes. As his reputation expanded, Derek began doing pop-ups, cooking in small kitchens, consulting, and appearing as a guest chef. The opportunity to share his love of food with the community arrived when he opened his first restaurant. Chef Derek served hundreds of people every day, and the restaurant became one of San Antonio's favorite places to eat. Chef Derek took pride in the smiles of both tourists and regulars alike and appreciated his dedicated staff. His proudest achievement was getting to work in the kitchen with his son. Derek was very excited to further his dream and was in the process of opening a new restaurant. His talent, creativity, love, and passion were endless. Derek's life truth, the main business venture under which all his other businesses lived, was aptly named Food + Love. A service to celebrate his life will be held (details to come).
