On April 14, 2016, we said our final goodbyes to our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Dixie C. Hughes, as she departed this world to her eternal resting place. Dixie was born to William Carson Cunningham and Ordie Mae Clark Cunningham on May 13, 1932 in Wills Point, Texas. Dixie moved many times with her father and mother before settling in San Antonio and attending Brackenridge High School. She went on to a 30-year career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company/AT&T before spending her last 30 years enjoying her retirement and large extended family. Her favorite pastimes were watching "her" San Antonio Spurs and occasionally taking trips to a casino with family members to play the slots, which she could happily play for hours. Known to family and friends as a "survivor", Dixie overcame numerous health problems in her later years including cancer twice, back surgery and heart problems before succumbing to failure of one remaining kidney. Dixie spent most of the last year in hospitals and rehab centers. Although she was suffering greatly and her memory had diminished due to dementia, her face would always light up when a visitor would stop by. In her final days, she was most happy when her great grandbabies James and Jaron were by her side. Although her physical presence will be immensely missed, she will always be fondly remembered by those who knew and loved her. We know she will be looking down on those she loved. Dixie was preceded by both her father and mother. She is survived by her son, Randel Hughes and his wife, Teri, of San Antonio; daughter, Wendy Shilling, of Von Ormy; daughter Lori Shilling and her husband, Evan, of Spring Branch; grandchildren, David Hughes, Melinda Cordell, Brandi Alfieri Chris, Lisa Quezada Carlos, Stephanie Allen Shawn, Shane Hughes Ashley, Corey McCay Richard and Clifford Shilling; and great grandchildren Tiffany Hughes, Clayton Hughes, Taylor Ware, James Alfieri, Kash Allen, Cane Allen, Trey Allen, Kayden Quezada, Gage Quezada, Andrew Pressley, Jaron Hughes, Lilly Galarneau, Ellie Galarneau, Beau McCay and Micah Hughes and James Belcher. Visitation will be at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral Service will begin at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Interment to follow in Mission Burial Park North
