Doris Mae Keyes, only child of Wilford Miles Keyes and Grace Gabrysch Keyes, was born in San Antonio. She married the love of her life, William Russell Garrett, in 1944 in Abeline, TX. Dottie & Russ settled in the newly built University Park neighborhood of San Antonio in 1949 where they raised 5 children and remained to the end of their earthly lives. In the early morning hours of February 3, 2024, she gently passed into the arms of her heavenly Father. Dottie’s dear mother, desperate for child care in during the great depression, often recalled pleading with the nuns at Ursuline Academy on Augusta Street to accept Dottie as a 4-year-old day student. They did. She later went to St Anthony grade school to which she WALKED daily from their apartment on East Woodlawn Ave. So when the time came, it wasn’t hard for her to convince Dad that the newly opened Holy Rosary Catholic School just a block from the house would be the best place for their children. In time all 5 were enrolled and they all WALKED to school. She volunteered to help with Festivals, Bingos and bake sales, all sorts of PTC jobs. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and served as a representative for Catholic Girl Scouting in the archdiocese. She enjoyed gardening, crafting, baking and was always an avid reader who also completed every crossword puzzle she started. She took pleasure in her monthly Ladies Bunco groups, one of which gathered for well over 50 years. PRECEEDED in death by her parents; husband Russ in 2003; son, Jerry Garrett in 2011 and two adult grandchildren, Douglas Victor(2021) and Mary Catherine Vangelakos-Sanchez(2023). A legacy of surviving family members will cherish countless memories: Daughters Grace Victor (Ralph)- Schertz,TX; Christine Vangelakos (Augustus)San Antonio; Loretta McKay (Jerry)-Fontana, CA and son Rusty-William R Garrett Jr – Ft.Smith, AR; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Sincere GRATITUDE to all who helped guide Dottie through the final days of Alzheimers & Cancer. These treated her not as a diseased, memory-deprived patient, but as the valued “child of God” that she was: Amedysis Hospice team: Valerie Perez, Diana Rodriguez along with Amber, Kayla, Lauren and Rev. Kirsten Hancock; Father Neville O’Donohue, SM, pastor at Holy Rosary, whose visits assured her that her parish family had not forgotten her; Christine and Augie Vangelakos who honored Mom’s wish to remain at home. Their love, patience and care were critical in her ability to reach age 97 with joy in her heart. SERVICES - Visitation: Mission Park North funeral home (Cherry Ridge) on Monday Feb 19, 5:00-8pm.
