Doris McClellan Heard went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 31, 2010 in her home at the age of 84 years. Doris was born in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, as one of 7 siblings. After high school, Doris attended business college to study accounting. She married Jack Heard in 1951 and became an Air Force wife, travelling the world with him, including Japan where the youngest son was born. The family settled in San Antonio in 1968 and she was widowed in 2007, after 55 years of marriage. She is survived by her four devoted sons, Paul D. Heard and wife Pam of Houston, Patrick C. Heard and wife Ann of Abilene, Rev. Michael C. Heard and wife Sarah of Lytle, and John D. Heard and wife Laura of San Antonio; as well as one sister, Mary Edna Cathey of Louisiana, and seven grandchildren: Matthew Heard and wife Makinzie, Rachael Heard, Rebecca Heard, Melissa Heard, Jordan Heard, Amy Heard, and Joshua Heard. Doris was an active member of Hot Wells Baptist Church for many years, and more recently a member of Southeast Baptist Church. The family is especially grateful to the deacons of Southeast Baptist for their ministry to her after she became a widow. After her husband's death, Doris managed to keep in contact with an extensive circle of friends and neighbors and enjoyed writing to friends she had met when living overseas. She lived life simply, never concerned with material things, and always looking out for the needs of others. Her main priorities in life were serving her Lord in her church and making sure all her family stayed bonded together. She was most proud of the education and musical abilities of her children and grandchildren. An avid reader, Doris especially loved the books of Rev. Billy Graham. She remained actively involved with family, friends, neighbors, and church until her death. We miss her smile, but know that we will see her again in heaven someday, where she will be joyfully singing hymns in the choir as she always said she would. Services Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2010 from 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 12:30 P.M. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South with a procession from Mission Park. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southeast Baptist Church of San Antonio, Texas or Cal Farley's Boys Ranch.
