Edith Berdelia Griffin went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2017. She was born in Hannibal Missouri on April 24, 1921. Another member of America’s “Greatest Generation”, Edith had a tragic beginning with her father’s abandonment and her mother’s death in an auto accident when Edith was 7 years old. She was fortunate to be eventually adopted by a farming family named Walker. With the Walkers, she always was made to feel a part of their family. Farming was a hard life especially during the Great Depression and Edith had to leave school after the eighth grade to work full-time on the farm. Later, the Walker family helped Edith enter beauty school and soon she began work in St. Louis, Mo. as a beauty operator where she met her future husband Tom. Edith was married to her beloved husband Thomas Griffin Sr. for 61 years. They moved to San Antonio in 1957. After their five children were grown and after Tom and Edith retired, they enjoyed visiting their children, traveling to Fredericksburg, Texas with the grandkids during peach season, and playing Bingo in Helotes, Texas. After Thomas Sr. passed, Edith continued as the center of the Griffin Family. She enjoyed country music especially Willie Nelson and actually attended one of his concerts at Floore’s in her 90’s. She also took many trips to Kickapoo Casino in Eagle Pass with her family. In the past 5 years she was fortunate to travel twice back to her home in Missouri. She kept in touch with her sisters Skipper and May Belle and her niece Linda frequently by phone. She also took tender care of her dogs Shorty and Annie. Edith was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She devoted her life to raising her own children and later with great interest and love watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up. Her everlasting love of children was also evident when she came out of retirement to become a Child Day Care provider at Medical Center Baptist Church for many years. Every child Edith cared for held a special place in her heart. She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas Griffin, Sr.; daughters Mary, Kathy and Patty; brothers, Boone and Perry, sister, Margaret. She is survived by her loving sons Michael (La Nell) and Thomas Griffin Jr. (Anne); 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Edith was outgoing and loved to share her experiences with anyone who would listen. She will be truly missed by all her friends and family.
