Edward Ancira Calderon was born February 02, 1926 in San Antonio and was called by our Lord on March 01, 2013 at the age of 87. Throughout his 87 years, he was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. He relished all the time spent with his loved ones, inspiring them to follow their dreams and believed that anything could be possible if you put in the time and effort. In the symphony of life, there are many musicians that contribute to a beautiful melody. Edward Ancira Calderon was a section leader of that orchestra. He and his trombone inspired people to smile and take a moment to enjoy the richness of simply being. Music saved his life, a life he chose to share with everyone he met. He began his career as a small business independent grocery store owner for 20 years, named "Ed Calderon Tienda de Abarrotes" located in San Antonio's west side on Tampico and Trinity St. He later moved on to his second career as an Insurance Agent for The Prudential Insurance Co, all the while following his passion, playing the trombone with the Larry Herman Orchestra at the Roaring 20's Ballroom. He was recognized all over the country for his musical talent. He never met a stranger, as was evident wherever he went. Upon his retirement, he volunteered to mentor children nearby his home at Woodlawn Elementary School. He also volunteered to be a child advocate for the CASA Association. He ushered and was security for all types of events at the Alamodome for decades. He worked at his local precinct as a judge during elections. He played with the Lamplighters Orchestra, preforming at the Blue Star, and blossomed with the attention that came from an appreciative audience. His life was a filled with richness and love. He will be missed, but the song he inspired will continue to the benefit of us all. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto and Maria de la Luz Ancira Calderon, his beloved sister, Elida Magdalena Calderon Cantu, and his beloved wife of 55 years, Gladys Marroquin Calderon. He leaves behind two brothers, Pete Calderon and his wife, Tillie, Herbert Calderon and his wife, Olga, and his eldest sister, Nellie Calderon Rendon. His children Diana Calderon Gussman, Ernest Calderon and his wife, Hillary, Edward Marroquin Calderon and his wife, Serena, Norma Calderon Montavo and her husband Rudolfo, Debbie S.Calderon Martinez and her husband Mike, 22 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of beloved nephews and nieces who were all touched by his love and life. Edward leaves a host of treasured friends and loved ones, whose lives were enriched by knowing him. He was class personified and loved by all whom he came in contact with throughout his life. There will be a special memorial reception "Celebration of Ed's Life" which will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the Weston Centre located at 112. E. Pecan St from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Complimentary Weston parking is located on Soledad St. The Lamplighters Big Band will perform to celebrate in Ed's memory. All family and friends are invited to attend.
