Eleanor Barbato Jenkins passed away peacefully January 15, 2006 surrounded by her family. She was a gracious and caring lady. Eleanor was born in New York on March 14, 1923 to Theodore and Mildred Barbato. After graduating from White Plains High School she attended Westchester School of Nursing, Valhalla, New York Grasslands. Upon graduation she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp where she served as nurse in Tinian where she met her life long love, the dashing pilot Cecil T. Jenkins. They would have been married 60 years on May 25.Eleanor was a kind and generous friend to all whose lives she touched. She loved writing and receiving letters from her many friends across the country. She was an accomplished and fun bridge player. She tried her hand at lots of creative hand work. Through out her life she used her skills as a nurse to care for friends and family. She volunteered with CTRC Cancer Treatment and Research Center and the Wilford Hall Wellness Clinic. She was also a nurse volunteer during the Polio Pioneer Program in the 50s. Eleanor was a faithful member of Bethany Congregational Church and in recent years took special delight in the carolers that came to sing for her. She was preceded in death by her sister Marion Benson and her brother Ted Barbato. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Cecil T Jenkins Brig. Gen. USAF retired; her three children, Kathleen Null and husband, Kenneth Null of Houston, grandson, Paul Cameron Kurth of California, grandson, Brian Matthew Kurth and his wife Mary Corrine Kennedy Kurth of San Antonio, and step-grandson, Kenneth L. Null, Jr. of Austin; son Thomas L. Jenkins and wife, Lynn Littleton Jenkins of Garden Ridge, and daughter Patricia De La Torre and husband Charles De La Torre of San Antonio, and many friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews dearly loved. The family wishes to thank her loving and dedicated care givers, Olga Flores and Deborah Camacho for their tireless and loving care for her last few years. The family also wishes to thank the caring staff at Manor Care Briaridge and VITAS hospice who work diligently and lovingly on her behalf for the past two months. SERVICESThere will be a public visitation on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 from 6-9 p.m. in the Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2006 at 3 p.m. at Bethany Congregational Church, 500 Pilgrim Drive. Graveside service at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday January 20th at 10:30 a.m.
