Elida Cano Alvarado, age 81, entered the gates of heaven on September 03, 2014 peacefully leaving us while at home. Elida was born on July 16, 1933 in Mission, Texas; the eldest child of Emilio and Eustaquia Cano. She resided in San Antonio since the early 1960's. Elida was preceded in death by son Reymundo Alvarado and brothers Emilio Jr., Ernesto and Elpidio Cano. She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Ramon Alvarado Jr., caring daughter and son-in-law Alma Alicia and Rudy Castañeda as well as five loving grandchildren, Jacob Aaron and Erin Nicole Castañeda and Joshua Rey, Justin Raymond and Joseph Henry Alvarado. Elida is also survived by brothers Erasmo and Enrique Cano, sisters Emma Salinas, Esperanza Rodriguez and Herminia Guzman in addition to several nieces and nephews. Elida was a wonderful homemaker but also worked for over 30 years as a cafeteria volunteer and then manager at Blessed Sacrament School where both her children and grandchildren attended. Elida impacted the lives of all of the children she served and the friends that she made while at Blessed Sacrament. During the summer months, she took special joy in caring for her grandchildren at "Nana's Daycare" where she would manage to make an adventure of the simplest acts such as making snow cones or choosing the movie of the day. She was always a model mother and someone that both Rey and Alma strove to emulate. She touched the hearts of everyone she met and was never a stranger to anyone. Elida's quick, beautiful smile was contagious and always warmed her family and friends. The sound of her voice never failed to brighten your day and lift your spirits. Her faith was a foundation for the manner in which she lived her life. Elida and Ramon were long time parishioners of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Through the years, she fought and survived breast cancer, kidney failure and dialysis, a brain tumor and strokes but never complained about her challenges. Elida was the core strength of and a hero to her family who will be missed but never forgotten. We are grateful for the time the Lord gave us with her and her presence will infinitely be in our hearts and souls. God has welcomed a loving woman who will eternally be our special, guardian angel. Services Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. A funeral procession will depart the funeral home on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Resurrection at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Interment to follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
