Ellen Mae Hicks, 79, of Somerset, Texas received her wings and peacefully went to Heaven to be with her Lord and Savior on April 11, 2023. Ellen was born on February 22, 1944, off Somerset Road in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of the late Roy P. Stuart, Sr. and the late Anna Marie Stuart. She was the third of five siblings: Roy Jr., George, Barbara and Richard. Ellen married her sweetheart, Dale Hicks, on February 2, 1963. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just this past February. Ellen graduated from St. Gerard’s High School and started working at Winns. She then worked for USAA before becoming a full-time mother of four. After moving to Somerset in 1972, she began the Good News Club to share God’s love with the kids after school. She worked at the kids’ private school, Bible Baptist Academy and earned her certification to teach, and she coached girls’ volleyball, basketball, track and softball. She helped start Grace Christian Academy to continue the kids’ Christian education. Other career highlights included the Union Commission Company (Union Stock Yards), Pediatrician Dr. Frosty Smith, HOA Management and the City Clerk/Treasurer for the City of Somerset. She served on the Somerset ISD Board and volunteered for the Somerset Youth Livestock Organization, a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher at Somerset Baptist Church, and Bible Memory Association. Ellen was a devoted and loving mother to four strong willed children: Ken (Darlene), the late Roland (Doria), Lisa (Tony) and Amy (Kevin). Grandkids are Kyle (Chelsea), Jessica (Cody), Amanda (Mark), Westley and Beth. Great Grandkids are Eisley, Damien, Rowen and Casey. She loved sharing the Word of God and being with her family the most. Dale and Ellen traveled many miles and made lots of great memories with their family and especially with their lifelong friends, Doug and Mary Semlinger. Together they were always up for an adventure and never shied away from an unpaved road. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Somerset Baptist Church located at 19961 Somerset Road, Somerset, Texas. Immediately following, a meal will be provided for family and friends to gather in the church’s Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ellen’s honor to Thru the Bible at ttb.org or the Bible Broadcasting Network at bbn1.bbnradio.org to continue her work by sharing God’s Word.
