TSgt. Elmer D. Greene Jr.

Elmer D. Greene, Jr. passed away on July 19, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas leaving behind a legacy of service and loyalty. He was born on December 2, 1940 and raised in the small town of Tyrone, Pennsylvania to Elmer D. Greene, Sr. and Betty McCaulley Greene. His childhood was spent playing various sports and attending Boy Scout summer camps in the mountains. Elmer earned the Eagle Scout rank – a legacy he passed on to his grandsons. After graduating from high school, Elmer left home to join the United States Air Force at age 18yrs. Thus began a 20-year career serving his country as a telecommunications specialist. He did tours of duty in Korea, England, Okinawa, and Turkey as well as Texas, Washington, D.C. and Florida. Notable tours included setting up communications during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Hot Line between Washington D.C. and Moscow. For a period in the mid 1970s, Elmer served as a Training Instructor at Lackland Air Force Base molding new recruits into Airmen. In 1978, he retired from the Air Force and began a 23-year career as a Store Director for HEB. Here Elmer used his communication skills and training skills to not only run successful stores but also help many a store employee reach their potential. He finished out his working life at his brother in law’s sportswear company. In his free time, Elmer played fast pitch softball and was a formidable racquetball player – often beating much younger opponents. Later in life he took up golf which was a game he enjoyed playing with family and friends. He also took great joy in teaching each of his grandsons to play golf. One of the most momentous occasions of his life was meeting his future wife while stationed in San Antonio. They began a life of travel and adventure that extended into retirement. His most constant concern was that Katherine be taken care of especially as his health began to fail. Elmer had a wonderful sense of humor and a positive attitude that was contagious to all who knew him. He was always willing to step in and help anyone when trouble or difficult situations arose using that sense of humor and positive attitude. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Timothy Greene; sister, Debra Focht; and brother, Gary Greene. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Katherine Wilson Greene; his brother Joseph Greene and wife Betty Ann; son, Chris Greene (Deneen); daughter, Carrie Fuhrmann (Richard); grandchildren, Stephanie Greene, Matthew Fuhrmann, Jillian Kirmse (Dan), Ashley Greene, Zachary Fuhrmann, Daniel Fuhrmann; and great-grandson, David Kirmse. The Family would like to thank Patriot Heights and Heart To Heart Hospice for their excellent care of Elmer during his final days. Their compassion and professionalism was truly appreciated. SERVICES Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 from 5:00pm-8:00pm, with a Rosary at 6:00pm at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 11:30am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
