A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Ernest G. Hernandez, Jr. went to be with the Lord on January 21, 2022, at the age of 77. He was born on July 30, 1944, in San Antonio, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto and Eloisa Hernandez. Ernest is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Irene Hernandez; sons, Michael E. Hernandez (Arcelia) and Marc A. Hernandez; 6 grandchildren, Adrian Hernandez, Miranda Hernandez, Jonathan Sandoval, Christopher Hernandez, Stephen Sandoval and Alexis Hernandez; 1 great-grandson, Rylan Sandoval; brother-in-law, Ron Botello (Kathy), and other extended family members and friends. Ernest’s priority in life was his family. He always put his wife, sons, and grandchildren before himself. He retired from Kelly AFB and retired a second time from Boeing. In retirement Ernest had a soft spot for the San Antonio Zoo. He volunteered as a Docent where he enjoyed guiding tour groups of all ages, educating them about the various animals. He was passionate about reading and learning. There were always several books going at one time. This love for learning translated to the many home projects he would take on. Once a mistake was made, which there always was at least one, he would read the directions or look for a book to show him how to do it correctly. He also taught himself how to play the harmonica, Amazing Grace was his go to song, and he loved to tinker with watches. Another passion of his was photography, always the photographer and never the subject. He also enjoyed bird watching, bowling, and shooting skeet. His love for his wife was evident through many projects he would selflessly allow himself to be pulled into. Whether driving around Texas to find the perfect quilt shop, making centerpieces for an event Irene volunteered for, or sealing envelopes for someone else’s Christmas cards. Ernest was always a willing participant, though sometimes begrudgingly. Ernest’s legacy will be the two boys he raised who have followed his example of family first. Visitation will be Monday, January 31, 2022 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral service will be on Tuesday, February 1st, at 9:00 a.m. at Mission Park South. Interment to follow at San Jose Burial Park.
