Georgie Mae Smith was born on December 16, 1925 in Los Angeles, CA, where she spent her childhood before marrying Harold Dillon Gillespie in 1945, and becoming a young military wife. She moved around the country with her husband as he served his country in the US Navy first, then the US Air Force. Harold was medically discharged in 1962 and they settled down in San Antonio, Texas to be near the military hospitals. Their family had grown to include five children before his untimely passing in 1964. Georgie exemplified selflessness and self-sacrificing love as she raised her children with God's help and the support of Christian friends. She never remarried because, as she said in her own words," I've had the best. No one else could even come close. I will always love your daddy." She believed no one else would ever love her or their children as he did. So she lived for the family they had created and carried on for them both. She always loved having her children underfoot as they grew, then their children after them. She was never too busy or tired to care for her grandchildren. Each of her grandchildren have special memories of her made from scratch recipes, time spent listening to her read, taking a walk, going to the schoolyard to play or working a puzzle with her. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and matriarch went home into the arms of her loving Lord and a long-awaited embrace with her husband on December 31, 2011. Georgie passed away peacefully in the home where she raised her children and cared for her grandchildren. She was surrounded by children and grandchildren, just as she had lived. Though we will miss her dearly, it is finally time for her to rest, paint, laugh, run, dance, rejoice and go for walks with her beloved Harold. Georgie was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dillon Gillespie, and a great-granddaughter, Zoe. She is survived by her children Gary, Gail, Greg, Gaye and Gwen; her grandchildren Lori, Jeremiah, Amy, Erin, Austin, Tyler, Dakota, Mason and Nolan; and her great-grandchildren Chandler, Morgan and Finnegan. Friends may join the family in honoring our "Memaw", as follows: Visitation: Monday January 9th, 5:30 - 9:00 p.m., at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Memorial Service: Tuesday January 10th, 11:30 a.m., at Mayfield Park Baptist Church Graveside Service: Tuesday January 10th, 1:30 p.m., at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, where her body will be laid to rest with her husband's, finally.
