Gilbert Benavides, beloved husband, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, went to be with the Lord on June 7, 2026, at the age of 80. Born in San Antonio, Texas, on June 22, 1945, Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Esteban and Bertha Benavides. Gilbert is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Olga Benavides; stepchildren Sandra Esquivel (Bobby), Lupe Melendez (Jacob), and Laura Sandoval (Eli). Gilbert was a proud grandfather to Benny, Jimmy (Jessica), Miranda, Mark, Jake, Eliana, Addison, and Tristan, and a cherished great grandfather to Leia and Jordan. Also surviving Gilbert is a loving niece, Sandra Montemayor (Rene), along with many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish a life well lived. Gilbert proudly served in the United States Army, including service during the Vietnam War. This service reflected courage, honor, and a deep sense of duty that remained throughout his life. Following his military service, Gilbert built a respected career at St. Philip’s Community College, dedicating 37 years as a Maintenance Supervisor. Gilbert was a devoted member of St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church; faith served as a guiding presence throughout his life. Gilbert’s greatest joy was time spent with family and fully enjoying his retired life. Favorite pastimes included fishing, traveling, and creating memories with loved ones. Vacations to Hawaii and Las Vegas were especially treasured, with his wife. Gilbert was also devoted to his dogs—Fluffy, Shadow, Bear, and Teddy—whose companionship brought immense joy over the years. Gilbert’s appreciation for cars was reflected in a cherished collection, including handcrafted wooden models he assembled by hand. Additional passions included reading and adding to a well-loved book collection. Gilbert loved music, especially Oldies and Tejano, and found great joy in dancing. Gilbert enjoyed sports and proudly cheered for his favorite teams, the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys. Classic western movies were another favorite, and Gilbert was known for sharing stories, offering thoughtful advice and making others feel valued and loved. Gilbert was profoundly blessed to share his life with his devoted wife, Olga. Their retirement years were filled with love, cherished moments with family, and joy in their grandchildren. Olga lovingly stood by Gilbert’s side and cared for him with remarkable devotion and grace until the very end. Though deeply mourned, Gilbert’s life is celebrated as one of service, devotion, and enduring love. A lasting legacy lives on through family, friends and the many lives he touched. Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed. May Gilbert rest in eternal peace, in the loving presence of our Lord.
