Gilbert Menchaca Guerrero went to be with the Lord on March 19, 2021 at the age of 89. He was born on March 16, 1932 in San Antonio, Texas to parents, Tomas Guerrero and Victoria Guerrero. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Hortencia Castro. Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Stella Guerrero; son Gilbert Guerrero Jr. (Angelita); daughters Diana G. Herrera (Alfred) and Nancy Leahy (Michael); sisters Guadalupe Lozano and Irene Martinez; brothers Tomas Guerrero and Edwardo Guerrero; grandchildren Desiree H. Romero and Vanessa Hansen (Kenneth); great-grandchildren Kathan Gilbert Hansen and Daniel A. Romero III. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed. Growing up in San Antonio during the great depression, families regularly utilized every resource to get by, as did his family. Seasonally, as a family, they would drive to Illinois and Wisconsin to pick crops to earn money to support the family, this is why those of that era are referred to as the greatest generation. In an effort to achieve more, Gilbert joined the U.S. Army in 1953, while serving at Ft. Bliss he was part of the ground crew on the Little John rocket tests at White Sands Missile test range during the Korean Conflict. It was during this time that he met his one and only love, Stella, in El Paso. After departure from the Army, he started working at FedMart, back in his home town of San Antonio. From FedMart he then went to work at the San Antonio ISD until he retired. He was never one to sit still, he was always busy working on projects around the house and always had to have his yard looking beautiful. He loved being outside and enjoyed feeding the birds, he could not go to the store without buying a giant bag of bird seed. He enjoyed spending time with his family and barbequing on the weekends while listening to his favorite songs and dancing with his beautiful wife. His favorite teams were the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys, he never missed a game. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who always put his family first. He will be dearly missed by all who’s lives he touched. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 2, 2021 from 5:30 pm. to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 11:45 a.m. at St. Leonard’s Catholic Church with interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. https://www.alz.org/sanantonio In accordance with CDC safety precautions, we require everyone to wear a mask upon entering the Funeral Home and practice social distancing. There will be a 75-person maximum allowed in the chapel. For everyone’s safety please honor the family from a distance. We kindly thank you in advance.
