Gilbert "Rickey" C. Marmolejo June 19, 1919 – March 8, 2016 Born and raised in Yorktown, Texas. Gilbert was an exceptional athlete throughout his life, excelling in all sports, but his favorite was baseball; playing first base for many years with several semi-pro teams in the San Antonio area. As one of the founders of the San Antonio Umpires Association and the Lutheran Athletic Association, he was well known in sports circles. He enjoyed umpiring baseball and softball as well as refereeing basketball, football and volleyball for 43 years. He was known as "Rickey" the umpire" by three generations of ball players, young and old, all around Bexar County and south Texas. Gilbert served his country during WWII, in the Army Air Corp, as a sergeant with the Cadet Training School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and in the Adjutant Generals Office, Fort McKinley, Luzon, Philippines. He continued his military service for 27 years in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer. He was also employed in Civil Service at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In retirement he enjoyed travel, visiting all over the United States, the British Isles, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Survived by three children, Gilbert A. Marmolejo Judy, Debby J. Ghirardi Peter, John C. Marmolejo Susan and grandchildren, Jamie L. Dahler Erik, Anthony P. Ghirardi Michelle Jamison, Christopher J. Marmolejo Melissa; three great-grandchildren, Jay Dahler, Joseph DeLaO and Caleb Marmolejo, one brother Brig Marmolejo and one sister Irma Wilson. The family wishes to thank the staff of Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home and Gentiva Hospice for their expert and loving care. We ask that you consider memorial donations to your church or charity of choice. Gilbert's life will be celebrated on Monday, March 14, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a service to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. At his request, a private interment service will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery where he will join his wife, Rhoda M. Marmolejo, in eternal rest.
