MSGT Gilbert Lozano Mauricio, USAF (Ret.) age 88 of San Antonio, TX went to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 14, 2023. He was born March 29, 1935 in San Antonio to Policarpio and Soila Mauricio. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his younger brother, Santiago Mauricio. He is survived by his children, Susan Coulter, Gilbert Mauricio (Renee), Donna Holguin (Jimmy), James Mauricio (Diana), 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, brother Reynaldo Mauricio, and numerous nieces and nephews. Very early in life Gilbert learned the value of hard work. He broke sweat in the cotton fields, delivered newspapers, and worked as a shoe shine boy in downtown San Antonio. He graduated from Luther Burbank High School in 1953. While attending Burbank, he played basketball and as he tells it he was one of the best. He was one of the two Hispanics on the team and was given the nickname Gibo. As an alumnus, he remained active in meeting with his fellow classmates as often as possible. Gilbert developed exceptional skills by paying attention to detail and performing duties that exceeded expectations which prepared him for serving his country in the military and civil service. He proudly served with the Air National Guard from June 1954 through Aug 1978. He served in many capacities as Personnel Technician, Accounting Technician, and Supervisory Computer Specialist. April 1981 he was presented the Minuteman Award from the Department of the Army and the Air Force National Guard Bureau for his distinguished service in the Data Automation Branch. He was honored for maintaining the highest rapport with field organizations and his thorough knowledge of base-level automated processing environment. Throughout his service with the military, he remained consistent in performing his duties that earned him several awards and certificates. He served at many federal institutions including the Pentagon, which was one of his proudest achievements. Gilbert was fluent in Spanish and was sent to the serve at U.S. base in Puerto Rico many times. He retired on March 29th,1995 after serving 43 years. Gilbert was devoted to his Catholic faith. He was a perisher at St. Mary's Catholic Church. He always made sure to give God praise and glory for the man he was and the life he was able to accomplish. Gilbert was a non published writer. His journals, outlining not only his life but those around him, spoke volumes of how important his family was to him. Throughout the ups and downs, he embraced the reality of life with his loved ones. His pride in his family gleams throughout the written pages of said journals. His generosity, without fail, was exceptional. His numerous hobbies included playing golf, reading and writing, thrifting and antiquing, music, and dancing. He thrived on a round of golf especially when it included some of his favorite players, his grandsons. One year during the Carriker cup, he drained a 40 ft. putt to help win this family tournament. His collection of books is, without a doubt, a reflection of his love of reading. His love of writing was not only displayed in the numerous journals he left behind but in every aspect of his life: pictures, paintings, cards, etc. His notes were descriptive leaving no room for guessing. Thrifting and antiquing were one of his favorite things to do, although not fully understood by others. Even in these events, he always thought about how others may benefit from his collections. He had a great appreciation for music. He enjoyed various genres but his favorite was the opera. And last but not least, dancing...let's just say he was the Mexican Fred Astaire. Gilbert (God fearing man, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, friend) will be greatly missed. SERVICES Visitation will begin at 4:00 P.M. followed by the Rosary at 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North, 3401 Cherry Ridge Drive. The Graveside Service with Full Military Honors will begin at 10:45 A.M. on Monday, November 27, 2023 at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road.
