Gildardo “Gil” Cano Perez age 79 of San Antonio passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023 surrounded by those he loved and cherished. Gil was born July 13, 1944 in Comales, Tamaulipas, Mexico and arrived in the United States from Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas, Mexico in 1955. He graduated from Thomas Edison High School with high marks and at the top of his class at the age of 17. He proudly joined the Navy in 1966 and served for 4 years and loved to talk about the places he would travel and the culinary adventures he had while in service. After the Navy, Gil dedicated himself to a career with Southwestern Bell. Always wanting his daughter to expand her knowledge, he would bring her to the station to show her the technology and how traditional phone lines operated. Gil was an avid hunter who liked to shoot elk, whitetail deer and bear and could go on and on about his hunting stories and how he could survive in near freezing temperatures. He was a bargain shopper and enjoyed telling everyone about the amazing “steals” he found. He was a smooth dancer and a talented pool player and loved to do that in his earlier years. In his later years, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and going to their soccer games and school activities any chance he could. He always brought them goodies, knick knacks, sweets and would often leave surprises for them to find on the porch when they got home. They were the love of his life and always brought a smile to his face. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eliezar and Adelita Cienfuegos; his twin brother, Medardo Cano Perez; and his brother, Jaime Cano. Mr. Perez is survived by his daughter, Margarita Canela Ortiz and her husband, Gabe; his grandchildren, Cristian and Alessandra Ortiz; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. SERVICES Visitation will begin at 5:00 P.M. followed by the Service at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 followed by words from the family. The Graveside Service with Military Honors will begin at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road - Committal Shelter 4 ~ please refer to attached map on this memorial in the Tribute Wall.
