Gladys Mae Gil went to be with the Lord on September 27, 2019 at the age of 89 in San Antonio, TX. She was born on June 19, 1930 in Lacoste, TX. Gladys was widowed and preceded in death by her parents: Delfino and Alma Jungman Gil; brother: Joseph Carl Gil; sisters: Frances Mora Gil and Dolores Gil; and grandson: Brent Whatley. Gladys is survived by her 7 loving children: Michael D. McMahon and former spouse, Sheila; Deborah Gleinser and husband, Paul; Jannette Sherry and husband, Buster; Jill Shuemate and former spouse, Steve; Scott McMahon and former spouse, Kim; John McMahon and wife, Lori; and Susan McMahon and former spouse, Fred; step-son, Michael C. McMahon and wife, Lou; Gladys’ sisters: Ann Adame Gil, Henrietta De Lara Gil, and Alma De Leclerc Gil; Gladys’ brothers: Delfino Jr. Gil, and Tony Gil; Gladys’ 18 grandchildren: Sonny, Robert, Bryce, Emma, Denise, Dianne, Michael, Tessa, Andrew, Katie, Sarah, Chrissy, Caleb, Colton, Ashley, Jacob, Brittany, and Kylie; and her numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Growing up, Gladys and her family worked on a dairy farm in Lacoste, TX, surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many other relatives. She grew up learning English, German, and Spanish. Gladys was fascinated with many other cultures and always tried to converse in a different language when the opportunity existed. Throughout her youth, she participated in beauty pageants, was a swimsuit model, and loved to dance flamenco. She went to school at St. Phillip’s College, became a Registered Nurse, and later on was a nursing instructor at San Antonio College for many years. Gladys personally encouraged and influenced many students and others throughout life to become part of the medical profession to include grandchildren that followed her footsteps in nursing. Later in life, she became a successful licensed realtor and was a member of the San Antonio Real Estate Board of Directors. Being involved in many organizations for her children, she was also President of the Texas A&M Mother’s Club at San Antonio and a Den Mother for Scouts and Brownies. Gladys also taught Sunday School at St. Pius X Catholic Church for many years. Shortly before she passed, Gladys was asked what her fondest memories and proudest moments in life were, and without hesitation she responded, “Raising all 7 of my children.” She was definitely a proud mother, had a strong personality, was protective of her entire family, did what she could to help ensure success for all, and was known to help many others establish themselves in the community. Through all her sacrifices, efforts, and love that she showed her children and family, she will be always be remembered for her ultimate faith, hope, love, strong will, and devotion. Gladys always finished conversations with “I love you” and “God bless you.” She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation will be Monday, September 30, 2019 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. with a viewing from 8:30-8:50 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Lacoste, TX. Interment to follow at Lacoste Cemetery.
