Harold “Ray” Sanders, age 77 formerly of Newcomerstown, Ohio passed away peacefully at home on Sunday February 7, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born August 17, 1943 to Frank Delbert and Clara Elizabeth (Goshorn) Sanders. Ray has been a part of the Baptist Medical Center for 51 years and served in the United States Army. He was a prior member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, most recently a current member to the First Presbyterian Church. Ray graduated in 1961 from Newcomerstown High School. In 1965, Ray joined the United States Army, served in Vietnam for three years, where he was awarded Marksman Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (1st Award), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and was Honorably Discharged in 1968. Rays education and occupation was X-Ray Procedures and Radiologic Technologist. While stationed at Fort Sam, Ray loved San Antonio so much he decided to make it his home. In 1970 Ray was accepted into the Baptist School of Radiology and graduated in 1972. He trained many Nuclear Medicine Technologists in San Antonio and the surrounding area and for some is known as the grandfather of Nuclear Medicine. As a member of Aldersgate UMC, Ray helped with Meals on Wheels, the Food Bank, creating the weekly church PowerPoint and bulletins, the church lawn service, decorating the church for all occasions, helping with VBS, and many additional church duties. While at the First Presbyterian, Ray enjoyed being part of a community, now sitting back and enjoying service and bible school. He loved God and would do anything to serve Jesus Christ. No one who met Harold Ray Sanders could ever forget him; His work ethic, his compassion and love for his dogs, his generosity in helping people family, friends, and strangers; his green thumb and gardening; but most of all his smile and gentle kind eyes. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sister, Norma Brown, Dwaine Sanders, Charles Sanders, David Sanders and 2 nephews. His survivors include many nieces, nephews, great, and great great nieces/nephews. Sam Houston National Cemetery: Dellcrest Funeral Home: Mask Mandatory, 6 feet distance, and only 40 guests inside building at a time in the chapel during the service. We ask that friends and co-workers be courteous and rotate to allow for others to have their opportunity to pay their respects as well.
