Harriette Gant Mergele October 2, 1930 – January 23, 2016 Harriette Gant Mergele, born October 2, 1930 in Jacksonville, Florida, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ, Saturday, January 23, 2016. Harriette was the daughter of John E. Gant and Glennie Louise Latham. Harriette is survived by her stepbrother, John E. Gant Crossville, Tennessee, daughter, Monique Mergele Hinchcliff San Antonio, Texas, three grandchildren: Brittany Leigh Hinchcliff Riverview, Florida, Ryan Scott Hinchcliff Ft. Belvoir, Virginia and Ashley Monique Carnley San Antonio, Texas, three great grandchildren: Seifer, Ashton and Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 48 years, John Byrd Mergele, Sr., and son, John Byrd Mergele, Jr.. As a devout Christian and long-time member of Leon Springs Baptist Church, Harriette served as a missionary to China every summer for 22 years her last trip when she was 80. She was a certified ACBC biblical counselor. She also spent many years volunteering weekly for CAM Christian Assistance Ministries at University United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas. She was an active member of the women's Phi Mu Fraternity during her college career and continued her alumnae membership and participation in the San Antonio Chapter well into her later years. The rose-colored carnation, the flower of Phi Mu, became her favorite color and flower, wearing those colors nearly every day. Harriette received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia go Bulldogs! in 1951 and her Masters degree from Trinity University in 1972. She was employed by Northside Independent School District for over 30 years, first as a teacher, then counselor, then associate school psychologist. SERVICES Visitation will be held from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 29, 2016 at 10:00 am at Leon Springs Baptist Church with reception to follow, Interment at 1:00 pm at Lockehill Cemetery. Flowers are welcome or contributions to the Lottie Moon Mission offering may be made in Harriette's memory in care of Leon Springs Baptist Church, 24133 Boerne Stage Road, San Antonio, TX 78255.
