Humberto "Hubert" Zulaica, 66, lifelong resident of San Antonio, Texas, was lovingly welcomed into the arms of the Lord Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Hubert spent his last days in this world surrounded by his devoted wife and adoring family. The second youngest of six children, Hubert was born January 9, 1946 to Fernando and Feliz Zulaica. He graduated from Highlands High School in 1964 and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served our country as an airplane mechanic and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After returning to San Antonio, Hubert began his training with the San Antonio Police Department and graduated from the academy in the class of 1975B. During his career on the force he was promoted from patrolman to Detective Investigator. While on duty in 1983, he met the love of his life and future wife, Dolores, a clerk at the convenient store he frequented. On December 5, 1987, he gave Dolores her storybook wedding at the picturesque Little Church of La Villita and selflessly stepped into the role of father to her three children. Through the years, he built a loving and stable home for his family in south San Antonio. In 2006, he retired from the S.A.P.D. after proudly serving and protecting our city for thirty-one years. In retirement, Hubert enjoyed golfing with friends, afternoon naps with his four beloved grandsons, playfully taunting Mildred Rincon, his 88-year-old mother-in-law who is always quick with a witty rebuttal, taking her and her husband, father–in-law, Genaro Rincon on road trips to visit family in other cities, and escorting his wife to annual holiday dances. He stopped at nothing to provide for his family and ensure their happiness. For this, his wife will always remember him by her affectionate nickname for him, "sweetheart, baby doll, love of my life, man of my dreams, all-around good guy." He leaves behind his wife, Dolores Zulaica, daughter, Matilde P. Martinez Jeremy James, son, J Martinez Gabriel Gallegos, son, Joseph A. Martinez Donna Silva, son, Arman Zulaica Phyllis, grandsons, Isaiah Humberto, Tristan Alejandro, Elijah Zulaica, Liam Miguel, sister, Angelita Olivarri Ray, brothers, Fernando Anita, William Rachel, sister-in-law, Beverly Zulaica, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who loved and adored him. His mother, Feliz, father, Fernando, brother, Roger, and sister, Rose Marie await him in Heaven. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the American Diabetes Association.
