BERNHARD Irene Gladys Bernhard passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 in Weatherford, TX. Irene was born in East Bernard, Texas, July 30, 1925, to Joseph and Louise Srubar. She moved with her family to San Antonio while growing up, and graduated from Brackenridge High School. During the early days of WWII she worked at Kelly AFB, where she met Wallace Bernhard. They were married August 1, 1943, and raised four daughters, born between 1948 and 1957. Irene was a dedicated and loving mother, adept at creating and sewing costumes and giving wonderful birthday parties. She spent countless hours chauffeuring her daughters to music, dance, modeling and other lessons. Irene and Wallace, a prominent San Antonio hair stylist, led a busy social life, and often included their daughters in attending San Antonio Little Theatre productions. They enjoyed having dinner parties and playing, at first Canasta, and then Bridge, with close friends. Their very special family vacations were often spent bay fishing on the Texas coast. When her daughters were older Irene assisted at Wallace's Beauty Salon in the reception area. Irene was an animal lover, and especially enjoyed the companionship of cats her entire life. She was also an avid bird watcher, and always had bird feeders to tend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Bernhard; father, Joseph Srubar; mother, Louise Remmers; two sisters, Christine Niver and Harriett Lazarie, and a brother, Alfred Srubar. She is survived by, daughters, Cindy Stuber and husband, Chuck, Kay Sheffield and husband, Gary, Mary Anne Schwope and husband, Larry, Jan Eckstein and husband, Ross; Grandchildren, Sarah Shadonix and husband, Matthew, Lindsay Henry and husband, Dave, Langford Stuber, Holly Hamilton and husband, Paul, Kelly Nelson and husband, Dustin, Leslie Sheffield; Matthew Ramirez and Jake Ramirez, Trent Eckstein and Cleo Irene Eckstein; Great grandchildren, Jack Shadonix, Helena Irene Hamilton, and Aiden Nelson; and numerous nieces and nephews. SERVICES Visitation will be held on Friday, June 1, 2012 from 5:00pm until 6:30pm at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 12:00pm at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Mission Burial Park North. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Irene to the SPCA or your local animal shelter.
