James M. Nichols Jr. Red lost his battle with cancer and was called to be with the Lord on December 26th, 2014 at the age of 76. He passed away at home surrounded by family. He is preceded in death by his parents James M. Sr. and Lillian Curtis Nichols, his brothers Roy, Wayne and Danny and his sister Irene. He is survived by his loving family, wife of 52 years, Geraldine L. Geri Ottmers Nichols, daughters Tracy D. Moore Kevin and Jeanette L. Teague and his son James M. Nichols III Katie, his granddaughters Amie Burke Moore, Taylor Nichols Teague, Caley Ann Teague, Grace Lillian Nichols and his grandson James Randall Nichols. Red was born on July 6th 1938 in San Antonio, Texas, attending Edgewood High School before joining the US Navy in 1959. After his service, he married Geri in 1962 and had three children. He worked for and retired as a railroad machinist from Union Pacific RR formerly Southern Pacific RR in 1999. He will be remembered for his love of family, passion for poker, dancing to Doo Wop, John Wayne movies and tequila. He had a great sense of humor, loved recounting stories and playing practical jokes. An avid outdoorsman and sportsman, he coached softball in men's, coed and women's leagues, taking his women's team to Nationals twice. He loved to fish both salt water and fresh water. He enjoyed bow hunting and taught archery to elementary school students during the summers. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. A special thank you to Bettie Nichols, beloved sister, for all her care, concern and companionship to Red during his long illness. We couldn't have done it without you. The family will receive visitors on January 2nd at Dellcrest Funeral Home located at 2023 South W.W. White Road 78222 from 6pm until 9pm. A funeral service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church located at 502 E. Nueva 78205 on Saturday January 3rd at 10am with burial at Mission Park South cemetery immediately afterwards. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and the wake following to be held at Little Italy located at 1122 Afterglow. The family would like to thank the Optum Hospice team for their care, compassion and support, especially Gloria, Molly and Dara. John 14:1-4 "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going."
