Janet Ann Pate was born September 11, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas, to Earl Harrison and May (Sams) Roan. She was called home to be with our Lord on March 22, 2025, joining family and her beloved husband of 62 years, Virgil Eru Pate, all of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Susan (Pate) Finch and husband, Francis Nelson Finch II, and Karen (Pate) Real and husband, Michael Roy Real: Grandchildren Katherine Marie Finch; Matthew Paul Finch and husband, Kyle Albright; James Michael and wife, Brooke Real; Christopher Wayne and wife, Abigail Real; and Rachel Elizabeth (Real) Hirschhorn and husband, John Hirschhorn: Great Grandsons Westin and Wyatt (sons of James Real); and Bowie (son of Christopher Real). Janet is also survived by her brother, Buster Roan and his sons: Timothy Roan and wife, Dori; Casey Roan and wife, Christine; and many cherished cousins and great nieces and nephews. Janet graduated from Jefferson High School and began her life-long career in banking. She started with Broadway National Bank right out of school and met Virgil while he was training at Lackland AFB. Theirs was truly a “love at first sight” relationship. They married within six weeks. Janet’s father assured them “it would never last.” The two literally grew up together, traveling the world and making friends in the Air Force. Their first child, Susan, was born when Janet was 19 and shortly thereafter the adventure began. They were first stationed in South Carolina and very soon welcomed Karen into the family. Janet and Virgil traveled further, and were stationed in the Azores, Washington State, Illinois, and the Philippines prior to retiring in San Antonio, following 22 years of active duty service. It was a great life. Throughout, Janet continued in banking, working in Washington State, Illinois, and San Antonio. Her career took her to Broadway National Bank, Mascoutah Bank, Southwest Texas Bank, University National Bank, and lastly, Frost National Bank. She excelled in Operations, loved numbers, and balanced her checkbook to the penny every month. Janet thoroughly enjoyed her work in banking. After retirement from Frost Bank, she couldn’t sit still and took on an accounting position with a local dental firm, keeping their books and closing out monthly (to the penny). Janet had a fulfilling career, but the neverending joy of her life was her husband, Virgil, her family, and her grandchildren. Most every Sunday, you could find the entire family at Janet and Virgil’s, enjoying Grandpa’s BBQ and swimming in the pool. She and Virgil were great dancers - they could “cut the rug” better than most and loved to two-step with one another. She made ceramics, grew violets and many wild flowers, went on weekend treks in search of the “most wanted” Beanie Baby of the week, and loved family reunions. Janet and Virgil found the joy of the Lord at University Methodist Church where they were active members in the Builders Class and church activities for more than 20 years. The family takes solace in the fact that Janet and Virgil had great faith, they adored one another, and knew that they would meet again. The bible teaches that our purpose is to love and be loved. Janet represented the epitome of this purpose. Her beautiful face, her smile, her patience, and her wonderful sense of humor were her most precious gifts, which she shared abundantly. So, Janet, good servant and good daughter - job well done! God bless you. God keep you until we meet again. We love you.
