Janie Bell Gloor, a caring mother and dedicated church member, died April 24, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. She was born Jan. 2, 1926 in Karnes City where she also grew up and graduated from Karnes City High School. Upon moving to San Antonio, she attended Draughon's Business School and worked several jobs, including at a cigar company and Alamo Blueprint both in the downtown area of San Antonio. She married the late Malcom Gloor in 1950 and raised four children as a stay-at-home mom, active in their schools' PTAs and events. Her life revolved around her family and faith, especially at Christ Lutheran Church of Alamo Heights. She was the church's nursery coordinator for more than 50 years, earning her the moniker "mama Janie" to several generations. She was the consummate behind-the-scenes volunteer, whose tireless efforts ensured receptions, funerals, fellowship dinners, Fiesta and other church events went smoothly. She coordinated confirmations, making sure youth had the correct robes and knew where to go. Generations of children called her the "snack lady" for her refreshments she made for the church's annual vacation Bible schools, including at last summer's VBS. She made chili every year for the annual Christmas tree decorating at the church and sauerbraten for the Oktoberfest that she coordinated. She was a fixture Sunday mornings greeting people with fresh coffee and offering refills. Her uplifting demeanor put smiles on people's faces. She was known for asking what needed to be done and for giving out her signature, warm hugs. She was preceded in death by her husband Malcom Gloor and a son Raymond Gloor. She is survived by four siblings Thelma Ehlers, Richard Wehman, Roger Wehman and Louise Fossler; three children Karen FitzSimon, Ralph Gloor and Brandy Gloor; and four grandchildren Leslie, Chance, Sophia and Deja. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Christ Lutheran Church In Memory of Janie Gloor. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church, 6720 Broadway, San Antonio, Texas, 78209 with burial at Mission Burial Park South.
