JoAnn Helen Strom, age 90, left this earthly existence peacefully to meet her Lord and rejoin her family and friends on 21 October 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl (Bud) Connie Strom and son John Walter Strom. She is survived by her sons, Earl Nathan and wife Lisa, of Tampa, Florida and James Carlton and wife Angela, of Corpus Christi, TX, Grandchildren, Earl Connie Strom, Jr. and wife Vickey and their children Lizzie, EJ, and Evie. When her son James met and married Angela, she became the proud step-grandmother of Veralyn Amaya, children Sophie and Luke, and Spencer Pearce, wife Olyvia and son Theo, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was born February 4, 1933, in San Antonio, TX, to John H. and Josephine Pieper. As the youngest of four daughters, although growing up in the hard years of WWII, she grew up bathed in the love of family and friends. She was a graduate of Brackenridge High School and lettered in music (band). Her father John shared his love of the outdoors with her. She loved roller skating, and in time was recognized for her skills on skates on the big roller rinks as a skate dancer, which is how she met her future husband, Earl. JoAnn supported her husband through his college years at Texas A&M, College Station, Texas. Although not an A&M graduate herself, she was a proud Aggie, and her blood ran as maroon as his (WHOOP!). She began her Civil Service career in those early years and, in the course of 15 years, worked at all the major Air Force bases in San Antonio, ending up at Randolph AFB and giving over 30 years to the US Government as a faithful and proud Civil Servant. She was a faithful wife, a supportive mother, and a fiercely independent woman. She was, along with Bud at her side, an avid outdoors person, enjoying camping, skiing, fishing, and hunting. She loved dancing and could be found in the evenings sitting at her sewing machine, creating the beautiful outfits that she Round and Square danced in with her husband. JoAnn was never afraid of being in the middle of whatever the activity at hand was. She was very much involved with her sons in all their endeavors, as both a driving and supporting force, ensuring each was given all the opportunities they expressed interest in. She made sure that God was a part of their young lives, and that they were raised in His light. She was always available to all her family, both immediate and extended, to ensure that love and security were available when it was needed. When she finally retired, she did not sit still. She traveled with friends, bowled on numerous leagues, loved to watch the San Antonio Spurs, and greatly enjoyed a good beer! She always had her beloved pups and kitties in her lap while watching the TV, and snuggled up with her when it was bedtime. As she grew a little older and slower, that didn’t stop her from playing a mean game of rummy (and she was GOOD!)! JoAnn (mom) will be terribly missed, but loved ones know that she is at peace, safe in the loving arms of her Lord, forever wrapped in the warmth of friends and family gone before and waiting patiently to greet those that she had to leave behind. Visitation will begin on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. with a funeral service to be held at 1:00 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South.
