Joe Louis Cuellar went to be with the Lord on January 24, 2023. He was born on February 15, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas to Juan F. Cuellar and Eulalia (Valdez) Cuellar. He was a graduate of Lanier High School, where he met the love of his life, Clara Gonzales. The two were married in 1957 and had 3 children. Joe and Clara relocated to a ranch in Verdi, Texas in 1971. It was there that he and two brothers banded together to build their own homes. He also raised cattle and farmed with his brother Jesse. He loved country life and raised his children to explore and embrace the lifestyle as well. He began a career at Kelly Air Force Base in 1953, a successful career that lasted 35 years. While at Kelly AFB, he was drafted and served 6 years in the Army and Reserves. He was a man who loved a challenge and never gave up or spoke the words “I can’t”. He instilled that fighting spirit in his children. He had a deep faith and praised God for all his good fortune and happiness. He also loved animals and saved his share of homeless cats and dogs, including the best rattlesnake killer we have ever known. Although Clara was his first love, Las Vegas was his second. He and Clara eagerly awaited each summer’s Vegas vacation, where they enjoyed shows, gambling, and good food. He is preceded in death by his parents Juan and Eulalia Cuellar; his sisters, Trinidad Solis, Sr. Jean Cuellar and Maria De La Cruz Sereno and brothers, Juan I. Cuellar and Jesus M. Cuellar. He is survived by his wife Clara G. Cuellar, his daughter Debbi Cuellar, daughter Norma Cuellar-Hicks and her husband Travis Hicks, son Joe Cuellar Jr. and his wife Patti Cuellar, brother Mariano F. Cuellar and his wife Anita Cuellar, Granddaughters Hanna Cuellar and Stephanie Hicks, Grandsons Joseph, and Jordan Cuellar, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Brookehill Funeral Home on Thursday, February 9, 2023, from 4 – 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2023, at Brookehill Funeral Home. A chapel service will be held Friday, February 10, 2023, with the funeral procession departing at 1:00 pm to St. Joseph Cemetery in Leming, Texas.
