John Charles Knight, or “Papa John” to his family, of Houghton, Michigan passed peacefully on September 27, 2021 after spending a quiet afternoon in the sun, enjoying nature. John dedicated much of his professional life serving his country before retiring from the Air Force in 1986 after 20 years of service. He later retired again from the Baptist Healthcare System in San Antonio. In his spare time, he enjoyed listening to his old 45 records, working on model trains, and spending time with his grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his father Charles, mother Marjorie, brother James, and his loving wife Theresa. He is survived by his sons Matthew and Christopher, two daughters-in-law Lorena and Susanne, his siblings Mary, David, and Patty, and his grandchildren Noah, Macey, Christian, Bailey, and Annabella, as well as several nephews and nieces. Viewing and Rosary will be held Sunday, October 10, 2021 at Mission Park North at 3401 Cherry Ridge, San Antonio, Texas 78230 from 6-8. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 11, 2021 at St. Mark’s the Evangelist Church at 1602 Thousand Oaks Dr. San Antonio, Texas 78232 at 10 am. Burial to follow at Mission Burial Park North Cemetery at 2900 IH 10W San Antonio, TX 78257. In lieu of flowers it was John’s wish to leave contributions in his name made to any Charities affiliated with the Knights of Columbus. To honor Papa John in your life, give an extra cheer to the San Antonio Spurs on his behalf or remember him fondly anytime you listen to the Mamas and the Papas. Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again! -Henry Scott Holland
