Jose “Joe” Antonio Obregon Torres was called to eternal rest the evening of Saturday, December 31, 2022 with the love of his family surrounding him. He was 79 years old. He was born September 18, 1943 to Amado Torres and Sara Obregon, the second eldest of six children. At 26, he married Jesusita “Susie” Sanchez in Muscatine, Iowa. Together they moved back to San Antonio and had five children: Elizabeth Ann, Norma Ann (deceased), Roland Joe, Suzann Marie, and Joe Anthony. After serving four years in the air force, Joe worked at Kelly Air Force Base for 38 years. He retired on February 2, 2001. During his working years, you could find him every evening enjoying a Miller Lite and listening to records, viewing the Country Music Channel, or watching a war documentary. Joe loved sports and running. He was an avid softball player called “Double-O” by his teammates because of his jersey number “00.” He coached his eldest son’s youth basketball and baseball teams and went to every baseball game throughout high school. He was an age group winner of many multiple distance races which inspired his eldest daughter to start her running career as well. During retirement, Joe kept himself busy working out for three hours per day at the gym on base, tinkering with his beloved 1974 Ford truck, and repairing lawn mowers as a side business. He also loved traveling with his wife to Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass, Texas and playing the slots. Joe will be deeply missed by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Susie Torres, and four surviving children Elizabeth Torres, Roland Torres, Suzann (Joel) Steele, and Joe Torres Jr. He is also survived by five siblings Janie, Yolanda, Esther, David, and Irma. A public viewing will be held on Monday, January 16, 2023 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brookehill Funeral Home at 711 SE Military Drive. Rosary prayer service will begin at 6:00 p.m. Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at 9:15 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church at 9883 Marbach Road. The burial will follow at 10:45 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road. All are welcome to attend a reception following the burial at the St. Rose of Lima church hall from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. to remember Joe and enjoy food and drink.
