Joseph Hubert Conner, 73, passed away October 14, 2008 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born July 30, 1935 to John Okie and Clara Conner in San Antonio, he graduated from Harlandale High School and attended San Antonio College before serving in the United States Army from 1954-57. A San Antonio firefighter for 21 years, Captain Conner was known as "Baby Joe". He enjoyed the camaraderie of the fire station and had many friends in the department even after retiring. After retirement, he became co-owner of Medals and Awards International. Throughout his life, he loved to hunt and fish and spent as much time as possible at the coast. Joe also loved to bowl and had many friends at the former Southside Bowling Lanes. He was a member of the Harlandale Masonic Blue Lodge, the Alzafar Shriners and the Scottish Rite. The life of the party, Joe will best be remembered for his wit, humor, and legacy of storytelling, managing to tell jokes to the nurses and bring laughter to his friends and family even during his illness, never losing his humor. He was a great cook, known for his prized pies baked from scratch and delicious pecan praline candy. And, he enjoyed gardening and growing tomatoes. A generous and giving husband, father, and grandfather, family was very important to him. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Elaine; daughter, Sheryl Sepulveda and husband Ruben; son, Scott Conner and wife Tracie; five grandchildren, Sophia, Sydney, Jacob Sepulveda, and Thomas and Clara Conner. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Harold Zirkel, Pat Cookie Cornelius, all of Medina City, and brothers, Mike and Paul Conner; sister-in-law Cora Helen Conner of Mesa, Arizona; a beloved niece, Carol Sue Kintigh of San Antonio, and nephew, Robert Winkler of League City, in addition to many relatives and close friends he considered family. He will be missed by his loyal dog, Cookie. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Okie Conner, and sisters, Lucy Howard and Cecilia Conner. The family is grateful to Dr. David Gordon and his wonderful staff, including Norma, Elizabeth, Bailey, Carmen, and Jennifer for their loving hearts in taking great care of Joe, and a special thank you to his neighbors for their support. Services Visitation will be Sunday, October 19, 2008 from 4-7 pm at Mission Park South. Funeral services will be Monday, October 20, 2008 at 9:30 am at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Internment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetary
