Joseph Oosterveen “Joe”, was an amazing man. He was a gentleman, a man of his word and respected by many. Joe passed away peacefully in his home, as his wife, Connie of 66 years, sons and daughters stood by his side. Joseph was born to Maria Santos Trevino and Ernest Oosterveen on Dec 8, 1935. He has a brother, Ernest Oosterveen Jr and two sisters; Isabel Beacham and Belinda Aguilar. Joseph attended school in San Antonio and graduated from Fox Tech High School in 1953. Joseph was a star athlete and played football and basketball. While he attended Fox Tech, he met Concepcion Lopez (Connie), they became high school sweethearts. After graduation, Joseph enlisted into the United States Air Force and served four years. Joseph continued playing basketball with the Air Force Basketball Team. In 1956, while serving in the United States Air Force, he and Connie were married. They began their beautiful love story. Joseph was Honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1958 and soon after began his career with the San Antonio Police Department. Joe retired as a Homicide Detective after 33 years serving the San Antonio community. Joe was respected by his peers and, because of his compassionate nature, the inmates looked up to him and were grateful for his kindness and compassion. Joe and Connie were married on November 7, 1956 and soon after began their family. Teri Lynn was born in January, 1959. Sadly, Teri Lynn passed away in December of the same year. Joe and Connie were devastated. They were so young and inexperienced; however, their desire to have a large family was not deterred. Joseph Albert Jr. was born September 1960; Suzanne Renae was born December 1962, Mark Anthony was born June 1964, Lisa Dianne was born June 1965, and, last but not least, Jennifer Jo was born in August 1968. Joseph loved his family. His family was everything to him. He never thought about himself first. Connie and “All the Little Os” were always his top priority. Joe’s biggest pride and joy were his grandchildren: Stephanie Lynn (Lisa), Crystal Renae (Suzanne), David Anthony Jr. (Lisa), Heather Michelle (Suzanne), Mark Anthony Jr. (Mark), Carly Rian (Mark), Jonah Abel (Jennifer), Samuel Jacob (Jennifer), and Cara Joli (Mark) and great-grandchildren: Arabella Monroe (Stephanie), Lazzaro Joseph (Stephanie), Thomas John (Heather), Eric Levi (Stephanie) and Zoey Alise (Heather). Joseph was a wonderful example of a loving father. He was raised by his mother and his grandparents which helped define him as a father. He was ever-present and ready to teach his children and grandchildren life lessons that he learned growing up. His goal was to build a life better than his own and raise his children to be the best people they could be. Joseph was a wonderfully genuine family man. Joe and Connie would plan their family vacations centered giving his kids a great time and making lasting memories. Joe loved people and loved to laugh. He loved to “shoot the breeze” with anyone he met. A sports enthusiast at heart, fishing and golfing were his favorite pastimes. He shared his love for these with so many. He also loved to try his luck at lotto or an occasional trip to Kickapoo. Joe made friends everywhere he went and people loved him. He is so loved and will be greatly missed by many people, especially his family. We find comfort and peace in knowing that this is not goodbye but 'til me meet again. A Visitation and Rosary will be held at Mission Park Chapels South on November 30, 2022, at 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. (Rosary at 6:30 p.m.). A Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church South San, on December 1, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. followed by interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 10:45 a.m.
